Alton Sterling’s Death May Destroy Louisiana’s Film Industry

Date:

WGN’s Underground runs from Baton Rouge to film in Atlanta.

According to WAFB, police in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, say an officer fatally shot 37-year-old Alton Sterling while responding to a report of a man threatening someone with a gun early Tuesday morning.

A shocking bystander video appearing to show the deadly confrontation later surfaced online. In the video, which is shown below, a man can be seen tackled by two officers. As one officer pins one of the man’s arms, a voice shouts, “He’s got a gun!”

Since the video has gone viral, it has sparked national protests, a resurgence in the Black Lives Matter movement and it may have secretly destroyed Louisiana’s film industry.

According to Come Tour Georgia, WGN’s most watched scripted series in history is leaving Baton Rouge to film outside of Atlanta, Georgia.

Underground follows a group of slaves who plan a daring escape from a Georgia plantation to cross 600 miles to freedom, aided along the way by a secret abolitionist couple running a station on the Underground Railroad, as they evade those tasked with bringing them back, dead or alive. Underground features Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Aldis Hodge, and Jessica De Gouw. On April 25, 2016 WGN America renewed the show for a 10-episode second season.

Was it Alton Sterling‘s death? The Black Lives Matter movement in Baton Rouge, Louisiana? Or was it Georgia’s luxurious film tax credits? Either way, Georgia has a new TV show filming in the Peach State.

Stay tuned for more casting calls, job opportunities, and entertainment news for Underground season 2.
