Ratings for The Oscars Hit an All-Time Low

Date:

Ratings for the Oscars dropped by nearly 16 percent.

Jimmy Kimmel’s return as Oscars host received an 18.9 rating in Nielsen’s overnight numbers from 8-11 p.m. ET, down 15.6 percent from 2017.

Last year’s Oscars had a 22.4 rating in Nielsen’s overnight numbers, which was down 4.3% from 2016’s ratings. Meanwhile, Rock’s turn had already dropped 8 percent from 2015.

At three hours and 50 minutes, Sunday’s Oscars may have only passed year’s runtime by one minute, but it managed to become one of the longest telecasts in over a decade. Not since 2007 has an Academy Awards ceremony been that long. Ultimately, the 2018 Oscars ratings reached an all-time low.

It is important to note, all three major Hollywood events including the Golden Globe Awards, the Grammy’s and the Super Bowl all saw a major drop in viewership.
