Chris Hemsworth says his relationship with success has changed dramatically over the years โ€” and today, his self-worth no longer depends on career achievements.

The 42-year-old actor, best known for playing Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, opened up about how fame, accolades, and box office numbers no longer define how he feels about himself.

Chris Hemsworth on Redefining Success

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Hemsworth admitted that earlier in his career, he believed external validation would bring fulfillment.

โ€œI used to think maybe if I was nominated for something Iโ€™d feel good about myself,โ€ he said.
โ€œOr maybe if I had the biggest film of all time, or launched another franchise, then Iโ€™d feel fulfilled. Itโ€™s absurd.โ€

Over time, his perspective shifted.

โ€œMy self-worth doesnโ€™t rest upon all of those exterior things any more โ€” though I still have to remind myself.โ€

Despite his status as one of Hollywoodโ€™s most recognizable actors, Hemsworth says detaching his identity from career success has been an ongoing process.

Anxiety Behind the Thor Persona

While Thor made Hemsworth a global star, the confidence audiences saw on screen didnโ€™t always reflect how he felt off camera.

He revealed that he struggled with performance anxiety and panic attacks early in his Marvel career.

โ€œI was far more uncomfortable and goofy than I wanted to admit,โ€ he shared.

Hemsworth explained that Thorโ€™s physical transformation became a kind of armor.

โ€œPlaying a god became a safety net,โ€ he said.
โ€œIt fooled people into thinking I was that confident, that certain.โ€

The role projected strength and certainty โ€” even when he didnโ€™t feel it internally.

Acting as a Childhood Obsession

Long before blockbuster franchises, Hemsworth says acting was an all-consuming dream.

During an appearance on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, he described locking onto the goal at a young age.

โ€œOnce I locked into the idea that I was going to become an actor, it was an absolute obsession.โ€

At the time, he admits, he didnโ€™t fully grasp how difficult the journey would be.

โ€œThere was a naivety about the reality of how difficult that was going to be,โ€ he said.
โ€œBut I guess it was sort of an escapism.โ€

That obsession ultimately carried him from childhood dreams to international stardom.

Praise From Furiosa Co-Star Anya Taylor-Joy

In 2024, Anya Taylor-Joy publicly praised Hemsworth after working together on Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

Despite portraying adversarial characters, Taylor-Joy said their real-life dynamic was the opposite.

โ€œHeโ€™s just the most wonderful, kind-hearted, big-hearted individual,โ€ she said.
โ€œWe have a lot of fun. Iโ€™m very lucky.โ€

Her comments echoed a growing reputation Hemsworth has earned in the industry โ€” not just as a leading man, but as a supportive and generous collaborator.

A More Grounded Chapter for Chris Hemsworth

From early insecurity to global fame, Chris Hemsworthโ€™s career has been marked by massive highs โ€” and quiet internal battles. Today, his reflections reveal a more grounded definition of success, one rooted less in recognition and more in personal balance.

As Hemsworth continues to take on major roles, his evolving mindset offers a candid look at what fulfillment can look like beyond the spotlight.
