Tom Cruise‘s Mena movie plane crashed in Colombia.
A plane carrying crew members working on Tom Cruise’s upcoming new movie Mena crashed in Colombia on Friday, killing two people on board and injuring a third.
According to reports, a third person was injured in the small plane crash in Colombia but, the actor Tom Cruise was not on set at the time of the accident, according to TheWrap.
A spokesperson for Colombia’s civilian aviation agency told the AP that two American pilots and a Colombian were on the plane, but authorities were still trying to identify which of the two people died.
Here’s what apparently happened.
According to reports, the twin-engine Aerostar was flying in bad weather late Friday afternoon after taking off from a small town near Medellin.
The aircraft was “returning to Enrique Olaya Herrera Airport in Medellin following production wrap on the film,” According to a spokesperson for Universal Pictures, which is releasing “Mena.” “On behalf of the production, our hearts and prayers go out to the crew members and their families at this difficult time.”
Tom Cruise, who is a trained pilot and an actor that loves to do his own stunts, arrived last month in Colombia to film the drama based on the cocaine kingpin Pablo Escobar. Mena, which filmed in Atlanta, Georgia for several months, is directed by Doug Liman, written by Gary Spinelli and features Lola Kirke and Domhnall Gleeson.
‘Mena’ is based on a true story about Barry Seal, a pilot who, in the 1980s was a gun runner, and drug trafficker who transported contraband for the CIA and Medellin cartel. He was eventually shot and killed in Baton Rouge. The title of the movie comes from Mena, Arkansas where a majority of the drug trafficking took place under the noses of several presidents and governors.
