Key Takeaways:

– Squid Game: The Challenge faced backlash due to allegedly poor working conditions and non-payments to contestants.
– Participants reported enduring extreme cold temperatures during the filming of the Red Light, Green Light event.
– Contestants claim they were not compensated for their participation in the series.
– Netflix denies the allegations, assuring they prioritize the health and safety of their cast and crew.

Alleged Grueling Conditions on Set

Participant ‘Marlene’ shed light on the physically demanding experience during the filming of the “Red Light, Green Light” game. While participants prepared for a two-hour activity, the game eventually stretched into seven in freezing temperatures.

“It’s not like we signed up for ‘Survivor’ or ‘Naked and Afraid.’ The conditions were absolutely inhumane…” Marlene told Variety. Moreover, she recollects an instance when a co-player collapsed due to the extreme weather.

Another participant known as ‘Jenny’ was aghast that the studio and Netflix kept under wraps the real number of people injured during the game’s production. According to her, almost everyone had to endure physical stress as part of the experience.

Extreme Temperatures for a Grand Prize

An unnamed contestant confirmed to The Sun that participants braved the extreme cold for the notable prize money of $4.56 million.

“Even if hypothermia kicked in then people were willing to stay for as long as possible because a lot of money was on the line,” they said.

Netflix Refutes the Accusations

Despite damning testimonials from various participants, Netflix and the show’s producers, Studio Lambert and The Garden, stand by their production quality and safety standards. In a statement to Variety, they forcefully deny any allegations of ill treatment or harm to contestants.

“We care deeply about the health of our cast and crew, and the quality of this show…,” read part of the statement. They assured the public that proper measures, including aftercare for the contestants, were in place, and an independent adjudicator was overseeing each game for fairness.

Strained Contestants and Claims of Unpaid Work

Notably, the contestants’ grievances didn’t stop at the harsh conditions. Participants also allegedly went unpaid for their involvement in the reality series, further fueling their dissatisfaction.

Despite the swirling controversy, Squid Game: The Challenge continues to be available for streaming on Netflix. While the event might bring the captivating essence of the original Squid Game closer to home, it also delivers a stark reminder about the importance of contestant wellbeing. As the allegations persist, only time will tell how Netflix will address these issues affecting this popular franchise.
