It was initially estimated to cost Warner Bros. $300 million to make to make two movies. However, Warner Bros was interested in making it into a trilogy. Which is probably a good idea since, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey made over a billion dollars and The Hobbit: the Desolation of Smaug made $958 million. Warner Bros. was able to get $112 million from New Zealand taxpayers due to New Zealand’s incentive program designed to attract major feature films.

The report does not feature a breakdown of costs. But, the cost for the Hobbit Trilogy probably cost more than $745 million when movie studios pay millions for commercials, marketing, and distribution costs.

The next feature film set to film in New Zealand is James Cameron’s Avatar. New Zealand increased that incentive program to ensure James Cameron filmed the franchise in the country.
