Steven Spielberg is bringing Stanley Kubrick‘s unfinished passion project, ‘Napoleon’, back to life as a limited series. Shakespearean tragedy and history will collide in this epic production of the iconic filmmaker’s vision.
Steven Spielberg is set to bring his cinematic genius to one of Stanley Kubrick’s earliest projects: Napoleon. This exciting feat will be released as a seven-part limited series on HBO, allowing viewers to enjoy an insight into the early works of two groundbreaking directors.
This highly-renowned director has collaborated with a major television network for the past seven years to bring his film to life. He is finally taking action and mounting an impressive production for the series! At the Berlin Film Festival, Steven Spielberg affirmed his commitment to the project, “With the co-operation of Christiane Kubrick and Jan Harlan, we’re mounting a large production for HBO based on Stanley’s original script Napoleon. We are working on Napoleon as a seven-part limited series.”
After the triumph of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Stanley Kubrick had ambitious plans to create a follow-up film. He researched the French Revolutionary leader comprehensively and planned to film all over Europe, including France, the UK, and Romania. Spanning the 1804-1814 timeline, this ambitious project was expected to enlist 40,000 soldiers and feature David Hemmings and Jack Nicholson in leading roles. Audrey Hepburn was also cast as Josephine – the leader’s wife.
Sadly, he was excessive on Napoleon due to the exorbitant filming costs of Sergei Bondarchuk’s adaptation of War and Peace and Waterloo not doing so well commercially. Instead, Barry Lyndon then became his focus. While it is still a mystery who will be tapped for the cast and when the series’ release date will be announced, stay tuned for more information.
