Nicki Minaj announces her retirement to start a family
Nicki Minaj has spent a decade as the queen of hip-hop. Now the artist has apparently decided to walk away from music and move on to being a family woman. The rapper sent a tweet on Thursday to announce her retirement.
“I’ve decided to retire & have my family,” she wrote. I know you guys are happy now. To my fans, keep reppin me, do it til da death of me, ‘X’ in the box- cuz ain’t nobody checkin me. Love you for LIFE.” The announcement comes a little over year since the release of her most recent album, Queen.
Nearly a decade ago, if Nicki would have walked away from music, she would have left a huge void in hip-hop for female representation. Today, there are dozens of new female rappers who are experiencing levels of success, thanks in part to Nicki Minaj herself. Many of the new female rappers taking over the hip hop industry today name Nicki as one their biggest inspirations. In recent months, Nicki has made efforts to pass the torch to other female rappers. This year, Nicki appeared with Megan Thee Stallion on “Hot Girl Summer.”
