About Jerry Seinfeld
Jerry Seinfeld is an American comedian and actor, best known for playing a semi-fictional version of himself in the sitcom Seinfeld (1989–1998), which he co-created and co-wrote with Larry David. As a stand-up comedian, Seinfeld specializes in observational comedy, often ranting about relationships and embarrassing social situations.
In 2005, Comedy Central named Seinfeld the “12th Greatest Stand-up Comedian of All Time”.Seinfeld was born in Brooklyn, New York. His father, Kalman Seinfeld (1918–1985), was of Hungarian Jewish descent and collected jokes that he heard while serving in World War II. His mother, Betty (née Hosni; 1922–2014), is of Syrian-Jewish descent; her parents, Selim and Salha Hosni, immigrated from Aleppo. Seinfeld grew up in Massapequa, New York, and attended Massapequa High School on Long Island. He is a 1983 graduate of Queens College, where he majored in communications and graduated with a 3.5 GPA. After college, he worked briefly as a stand-up comedian, following in the footsteps of his idol, Bill Cosby, before landing a spot as a writer for The Late Show with David Letterman in 1981. He was quickly noticed by comedian Rodney Dangerfield, who signed the young comic to open.
Seinfeld’s first appearance occurred on May 9, 1981, on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, as the last comic booked for that night, following tanked appearances by a Ventriloquist, and a juggler. Seinfeld has said his comedy career began when he was approached by Dangerfield while the two were waiting in line to get into a comedy club.
Dangerfield asked Seinfeld if he wanted to be a comedian, an offer Seinfeld accepted immediately. However, Seinfeld has told several different versions of the story of how his career began. At the time, Seinfeld was performing in clubs in New York and Los Angeles.
