Marvel VFX Artists to Vote for Unionization

Date:

The VFX crews at Marvel Studios are embarking on a significant step towards unionization, with voting set to commence on August 21. The ballots are scheduled for submission by September 11, and the official vote tally will occur on September 12.

In a press release issued on August 7, it was highlighted that a “supermajority of Marvel’s crew, consisting of over 50 workers, have formally expressed their desire to be represented by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), as evidenced by the authorization cards they’ve signed.”

Mark Patch, the VFX organizer for IATSE, stated, “For nearly five decades, professionals in the visual effects sector have been deprived of the same safeguards and advantages that their peers in the industry have enjoyed since the inception of Hollywood cinema. This marks a momentous inaugural step as VFX workers unite with a collective voice, advocating for acknowledging our contributions.”

This attempt at unionization is an unprecedented move by VFX experts, who have remained non-unionized mainly within this realm. IATSE, encompassing more than 168,000 technicians, artisans, and artisans engaged in the film and TV domain, has historically represented roles like production designers/art directors, camera operators, sound technicians, editors, hair and makeup artists, costume designers, script supervisors, grips, lighting technicians, and more. However, VFX workers have remained an exception to this representation.

VFX coordinator Bella Huffman emphasized, “We have been excluded from turnaround times, safeguarded hours, and equitable compensation. The visual effects sector must evolve into a sustainable and secure arena, catering to the well-being of those who have endured prolonged struggles and newcomers who deserve fair treatment.”

This decision by VFX artists arrives amidst a broader surge of union-related activities this season, as writers and actors participate in an unprecedented dual strike, taking to the picket lines.

Matthew D. Loeb, the international president of IATSE, remarked on the timing of the vote, stating, “We are witnessing an unparalleled wave of unity that transcends traditional barriers within the industry, underscoring our shared struggle. This isn’t a random occurrence. Entertainment professionals across the spectrum stand up for each other’s rights, epitomizing the essence of our movement. I congratulate these workers for this significant stride and for leveraging their collective voice.”

In recent months, Marvel’s VFX artists have garnered attention due to their work on projects such as “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” “Thor: Love and Thunder,” “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,” and “Secret Invasion,” which have faced criticism. Simultaneously, various artists have come forward with allegations of unfavorable working conditions within Marvel projects. Multiple reports online have shed light on the studio’s rigorous post-production schedules, encompassing concerns ranging from persistent overtime demands to chronic understaffing and the challenge of maintaining quality work amidst ever-changing deadlines.

The initial report on the vote was brought to light by Vulture, with workers advocating for an early union election as soon as August 21.
