Marvel Enlists Terry Matalas for Upcoming Vision Series

Date:

Key Takeaways:

– Terry Matalas, known for the series 12 Monkeys, takes on the role of showrunner for the new Marvel Disney+ series centered on Vision.
– The series will follow Paul Bettany’s Vision character after the events of WandaVision.
– The yet-untitled series is expected to launch in 2026.
– The involvement of initially reported writer Jac Schaeffer remains uncertain.

Marvel Studios has firmed up the administrative hierarchy for its upcoming Disney+ series focusing on Vision, the character portrayed by Paul Bettany. The series, still unspecified in title, will have Terry Matalas, distinguished for his work on 12 Monkeys, as the showrunner.

Matalas Takes the Lead

Well-known TV writer and director Terry Matalas has been brought in to run the upcoming Marvel series revolving around Vision, reports Variety. Fans can rest assured that Paul Bettany will reprise his role from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), providing continuity in the ever-expanding universe.

The new venture will likely follow the narrative built in WandaVision and is slated for a 2026 release. Marvel Studios’ intentions of delving deeper into Vision’s character were first introduced in 2022, and development proceeded through discussions since then.

Uncertainty around Jac Schaeffer’s Involvement

Initial reports suggested that Jac Schaeffer would pen the series, but these plans encountered ambiguities when the project disappeared from her Writers Guild of America (WGA) profile. Updates about Schaeffer’s involvement in the project have been sparse.

Currently, Schaeffer is engaged in the development of another WandaVision spin-off, Agatha All Along, starring Kathryn Hahn. As of now, vision series is predicted to be a part of the studio’s plan for sparse but impactful releases every year.

Matalas’ Prominent Career

Terry Matalas has earned credits for his contributions to Star Trek: Picard, serving as a writer, producer, and co-showrunner for three successful seasons. His portfolio includes work on the CBS reboot of MacGyver Season 4, Nightflyers, and the 2003 series Star Trek: Enterprise. However, his true claim to fame tends to be the Syfy mystery drama, 12 Monkeys.

Adapted loosely from Bruce Willis’ 1995 namesake movie, 12 Monkeys follows the journey of a future-dwelling scavenger who time travels to prevent a fatal plague and exterminate twelve monkeys responsible for spreading the virus. Matalas took up the mantle of showrunner alongside Travis Fickett during the series’ second season.

Syfy aired four seasons of the series, after which it was discontinued. Despite this, the show has garnered a dedicated audience on various streaming platforms thanks to its intricate plot, fascinating performances, and Matalas’s thorough attention to detail.

High Expectations for the Vision Series

With Matalas piloting the Vision series, fan expectations are skyrocketing. MCU enthusiasts are optimistic that Matalas’s signature blend of complex narrative and visually-immersive experiences will elevate the show, just as it did with 12 Monkeys.

Preparing for its 2026 release, the untitled Marvel series starring Vision promises to captivate audiences with fresh plotlines and innovative storytelling, all under the guidance of Matalas. Meanwhile, fans and newcomers alike can rewatch or discover 12 Monkeys, one of Matalas’s highly acclaimed works, on Prime Video.
