Louisville, Kentucky, is Becoming a Top Filming Location

Date:

Louisville has become an attractive destination for the film industry due to its generous state tax incentive program.

While Kentucky has seen its fair share of film production in the state, from Bill Murray’s ‘Stripes’ to ‘Secretariat’ and Orlando Bloom’s ‘Elizabethtown,’ such opportunities have been few and far between.

The past twelve months have seen a surge in movie production applications within the commonwealth, with more than 50 films applying. Soozie Eastman, president of 502 Film and chairperson of the Louisville Film Commission, attributes this to Kentucky’s entertainment tax incentive program.

“I would venture to say it’s the best in the entire country,” Eastman said.

Qualifying companies can take advantage of an incredible incentive in Kentucky known as the KEI program, which provides up to 35% nonrefundable and nontransferable tax credits. Whether it be a feature film, Broadway production, industrial film, or television show – all are eligible for this beneficial credit!

“So if you look at just one feature film that took place earlier in 2022, they used 2,000 hotel room nights,” Eastman said. “So you look at that kind of impact on just one production and what that does for our community.”

Eastman predicts that more productions are on the horizon thanks to the revamp of Louisville Gardens.

“The Louisville Gardens is really going to be able to be that kind of flagpole, that mainstay for the community,” Eastman said.
