Ke Huy Quan Says He’s “Worried” That His Comeback Success “Is Only a One-Time Thing”

Date:

As reported by PEOPLE, Ke Huy Quan’s Oscar-winning return is growing in success, but he worries that this could be merely a “one-time thing.” Opening up to Variety for an exclusive post-Oscar cover story, Quan shared his concerns about the future of his acting career. After winning one of the entertainment industry’s most prestigious awards, The Goonies actor Quan is still concerned about his future after spending decades struggling to obtain roles since he was a child star in the 1980s.

He proclaimed, “Everything is still so fresh in my mind. I’m still terrified. I won an Oscar, but I’m still terrified. I had a conversation with my agent, and I said I’m so worried this is only a one-time thing.'”

Quan added, “I’ve been down this road before, and I’m so afraid that history will repeat itself. I said, ‘please, whatever you do, please make sure that does not happen.’

At a recent awards season event, the actor divulged that he had received sage advice from Cate Blanchett – a two-time Academy Award winner.

With Quan remembering her advice, he uttered. “And she said, ‘Just go with your heart and be irresponsible: Don’t worry about other people’s thoughts. Choose something that you believe in, choose something that you love, and things will work out.'”

Upon claiming his Oscar for Best Supporting Actor at the 95th Academy Awards, Quan was overwhelmed with joy and emotion when Ariana DeBose uttered his birth name as she presented him with the award.

Quoting Quan, he stated, “When I started as a kid, it was my birth name, Ke Huy Quan. And I remembered when it got tough; my manager told me that ‘maybe, you know, it would be easier if you were to have an American-sounding name,’ I was so desperate for a job that I would do anything.”

Early in his career, the actor used Jonathan Ke Quan and Jonathan Quan as aliases; however, he returned to using his birth name when he resumed acting in 2020.

“The very first thing that I wanted to do was to return to my birth-given name,” Quan said.

He added, “Tonight, to see Ariana open that envelope and say ‘Ke Huy Quan,’ that was a special moment for me. And then immediately I was so emotional.”
