Jared Leto Reportedly Says He Was Tricked Into ‘Suicide Squad’

Date:

Jared Leto reportedly tells Warner Bros. “F*** ‘EM” over Suicide Squad.

Whether you loved the movie, or hated it, there is one thing that you cannot deny, the finished film was extemely different than the trailers. In fact, a lot of the scenes from the trailer didn’t even make it into the final feature film, much to the frustration of the cast and crew. And it seems that our new Joker had his scenes cut out the most. Understandably, then, nobody seems more upset with Warner Bros. than Jared Leto.

Last weekend, Jared Leto vented about his frustration with the movie. We don’t have the actual quotes, but one fan on Tumblr summarized them:

“He was very honest about the film this weekend; his disappointment in what he’s learned of the theatrical cut (he’s still not seen the film); feeling sort of tricked into being a part of something that had been pitched to him very differently; thinking it would’ve been more artistic than what it became; feeling overwhelmed by the hate regarding the look and choices.”

What’s more, he also disclosed another thing that’s frustrating about his work with Warner Bros. As part of his contract, he is forbidden from taking part in dangerous activities. Leto’s response was shocking: “F— Them”

It’s pretty rare to see an actor to be so upset with a studio. So what happened?

Jared Leto’s Joker was a major role in the marketing campaign for Suicide Squad. All of the press prior to the movie’s release centered around Jared Leto’s on-set antics. However, when the movie actually hit theaters, Leto was barely in the movie. And Leto is presumably upset with the fact that he spent months getting into character for the movie.

However, the critical backlash against Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice took Warner Bros. by surprise and with Suicide Squad nearly complte, the studio reportedly panicked and order for additional scenes to be reshot and ultimately several different versions of the movie were created. Ultimately, Jared Leto’s Joker was ultimately cut. Defending the studio, Margot Robbie, who plays harley Quinn, said:

They probably realised that the emotional through-line of the story had to be the mission that we were on, and explaining the Enchantress’ position and all that kind of stuff. And the [Harley and Joker] backstory stuff, though it’s magic and some of the stuff we shot was insane, they are flashbacks…so there’s a lot, but it just didn’t make sense to confuse the present story line to incorporate all that.”

However, fans have their own suspicious. The relationship between Harley Quinn and the JOker is a disturbing and dark relationship, and putting this relationship at the center stage would have put the film open to criticism of sexism, abuse and misogyny. That being said, it is only a fan-theory.

Whatever the truth is, the reality is that Jared Leto’s scenes were reduced dramatically.

So what happens next?

Jared Leto’s disappointment with the feature film is raising a major issue and compounded with the fact that people were not that impressed by Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. is placed in a very precarious situation.

Jared Leto is playing a major part in the DC Expanded Universe and it is expected that some time in the future Leto will be going head to head against Batman, who is played by Ben Afffleck. In addition, the end of the movie set up both the Suicide Squad sequel, and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn-focused movie. Both of whicha re likely to have a strong Joker presence in them. At this point in time, though, one of the key actor for the future of the DCEU is not happy.

It is safe to assume that Jared Leto is on a multi-picture deal, as Ryan Gosling passed on the role because he did not want to commit to multiple movies. Thus, Leto’s likely to be around for a while, and while does not really like the way Suicide Squad panned out. He does not really have any choice in the matter.
