OpenAI Pauses Use of “Sky” Voice in ChatGPT 4o Following User Concerns
Last week, OpenAI introduced its new ChatGPT 4o model, featuring an emotive “Voice Mode.” Among the voices, one named “Sky” drew attention for its resemblance to Scarlett Johansson’s voice in the 2013 film Her. Following user concerns, OpenAI announced it would pause the use of Sky while addressing these issues.
OpenAI clarified that Sky’s voice was from a different professional actress and not an imitation of Johansson. The company emphasized its thorough casting process involving over 400 submissions, narrowing down to 14, and finally selecting five voices. They worked closely with award-winning casting directors and producers, ensuring that each actor understood the project’s scope before committing. Recording sessions took place in San Francisco before releasing the voices last fall. OpenAI also assured ongoing high compensation for the actors and plans to add new voices over time.
In a blog post, the company responded to the concerns, and explained its process for creating the AI voices, explaining that it ran an extensive casting and audition process.
“We believe that AI voices should not deliberately mimic a celebrity’s distinctive voice — Sky’s voice is not an imitation of Scarlett Johansson but belongs to a different professional actress using her own natural speaking voice,” the blog post said. “To protect their privacy, we cannot share the names of our voice talents.”
“We spoke with each actor about the vision for human-AI voice interactions and OpenAI, and discussed the technology’s capabilities, limitations, and the risks involved, as well as the safeguards we have implemented. It was important to us that each actor understood the scope and intentions of Voice Mode before committing to the project,” the blog post continued, adding that they would eventually settle on the five final voices.
OpenAI’s commitment to the creative community and careful collaboration with the voice acting industry highlights their dedication to ethical AI voice development.
