Warner Bros. made an announcement last year that J.K. Rowling was writing a screenplay for a Harry Potter spin off movie and many people were shocked.
The upcoming movie spinoff was called “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”. But, none of the remaining details surrounding the project were released; until now.
The New York Times revealed that the Fantastic Beasts series is currently planned as a trilogy, and that three “megamovies” are planned for release.
The information came during a Times profile of Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara, noting how one of his big successes in his short time in his position so far was convincing Rowling to expand the Potter universe into more films, something he considered a very hard sell.
J.K. Rowling tells the New York Times that, “When I say he made Fantastic Beasts happen, it isn’t P.R.-speak but the literal truth. We had one dinner, a follow-up telephone call, and then I got out the rough draft that I’d thought was going to be an interesting bit of memorabilia for my kids and started rewriting!”
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is set 70 years before the events in Harry potter, but it is not really considered a prequel. Rather, that the upcoming feature film is not connected to the story of the Potter books and films. The new movie focuses on Newt Scamander, an expert in magical creatures, who was the author of the text book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
