Actor’s Strike: Emma Stone’s ‘Poor Things’ Release Date Pushed to December

Date:

Searchlight Pictures has announced a new release date for the highly anticipated film ‘Poor Things,’ directed by Yorgos Lanthimos.

The movie, featuring Hollywood stars Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, and Willem Dafoe, is set to premiere at the prestigious Venice Film Festival.

To ensure maximum exposure and promotion for the film, Searchlight Pictures has postponed its theatrical release to December 8, shifting it from the original date of September 8. This strategic move is aimed at leveraging the star power of the A-list cast once the Hollywood actors’ strike is resolved. With significant studios grappling with unprecedented SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America strikes, actors have been prohibited from promoting upcoming projects tied to major studios or streaming platforms.

By postponing the release, Searchlight hopes to capitalize on the star-studded cast’s promotional activities once they can fully engage in marketing without any restrictions. However, it means that the film’s director, Yorgos Lanthimos, might have a more subdued red carpet experience at the Venice Film Festival due to the absence of the main stars.

Another film, ‘Challengers,’ directed by Luca Guadagnino and starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist, was initially scheduled to open the Venice Film Festival but was delayed to April 26, 2024. This decision allowed its A-list cast to actively participate in promotional events after the actors’ labor action was resolved.

‘Poor Things’ revolves around Emma Stone’s character, Bella Baxter, who discovers newfound freedom and purpose as a Frankenstein-like monster in the Searchlight Pictures production. Willem Dafoe portrays the brilliant and unconventional scientist responsible for Bella’s creation, drawing inspiration from Mary Shelley’s classic horror novel ‘Frankenstein.’ Meanwhile, Mark Ruffalo plays a charismatic and morally questionable lawyer in the movie, featuring Ramy Youssef, Jerrod Carmichael, and Christopher Abbott in pivotal roles.

The screenplay for ‘Poor Things’ was written by Tony McNamara, acclaimed for his work on ‘The Favourite.’ The film is based on the novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray. Yorgos Lanthimos, known for his directorial works such as ‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer’ and ‘Dogtooth,’ is at the helm of this exciting project.

‘Poor Things’ is being produced by Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe’s Element Pictures and Film4, the team behind the critically acclaimed ‘The Favourite.’ Emma Stone is also involved as a producer through her Fruit Tree banner alongside Yorgos Lanthimos.

With the film’s release strategically rescheduled and a stellar cast bringing life to this unique tale, ‘Poor Things promises to be a cinematic masterpiece that audiences will eagerly anticipate.
