The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Aadrita Mukerji would write a script for a new installment of the Anne Hathaway-led franchise. Sources close to the project have said that the film will not be a reboot but a continuation of the existing storyline. Whether or not Hathaway will return to star in the next sequel has yet to be determined. However, she has indicated that she would support another third film.
In 2001, Hathaway took on the lead role in The Princess Diaries. The film is about an American teenager who unexpectedly becomes the heir to a European throne. They continued this plot in 2004 with Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. Garry Marshall directed both films. Debra Martin Chase, who produced the franchise’s first two installments, is slated to executive produce the third film as well.
