Deadpool & Wolverine Outduel ‘It Ends With Us,’ Maintaining Box Office Lead

Date:

Key Takeaways:
* Deadpool & Wolverine holds the top box office spot for the third consecutive weekend, with a gross of $54 million.
* Blake Lively’s It Ends With Us put up a grand fight with a $50 million haul, emerging as a potential summer hit.
* Eli Roth’s Borderlands proved to be a flop with a disappointing $8 million box office intake.
* Twisters performed nicely, earning $15 million, while Inside Out 2 appeals to its family audience bringing in nearly $5 million.
* Cuckoo and Longlegs, two horror films, round out the chart bringing in $3 million and $2 million respectively.

Over this past weekend, a box office domestic duel saw a face-off between a husband and wife team. Decked in his superhero suit, Ryan Reynolds with ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ stood tall against Blake Lively’s romantic drama ‘It Ends With Us.’ Although no one was bruised in this battle, the hero-costumed Reynolds came out on top, holding the top box office position for the third weekend straight. It seems like Deadpool isn’t just favourite in the comics but also among theatre-goers, with an impressive $54 million gross this weekend.

Even massively popular Deadpool failed to eclipse the shine of ‘It Ends With Us.’ Pulling in $50 million at the box office, Lively’s drama tasted success too. Adapted from Colleen Hoover’s novel of the same name, the movie is already creating waves as a significant romantic drama in recent memory. Better still, its A-minus CinemaScore rating hints at a promising run at the theatres.

Regrettably, not all new releases spiralled up. Eli Roth’s ‘Borderlands,’ for instance, couldn’t impose itself at the weekend box office, scoring a meagre $8 million. Judging by its dismal D+ CinemaScore rating, it seems destined to become a box office disaster.

Meanwhile, the underperformance of ‘Borderlands’ added to the fortune of ‘Twisters.’ The newly released film managed to draw a satisfying $15 million. Additionally, ‘Inside Out 2’ from Pixar continued to captivate the family audience, generating nearly $5 million, which pushes its domestic gross to a whopping $636 million.

In contrast, ‘Harold and the Purple Crayon’ didn’t share the same luck. The family flick had a miserable weekend, collecting a mere $3.1 million.

The bottom of the chart was filled by two Neon’s horror flicks. ‘Cuckoo,’ featuring Euphoria’s Hunter Schafer, made a relatively soft landing with $3 million, while the breakout hit ‘Longlegs’ managed $2 million, pushing its domestic total above $71 million.

As the box-office rollercoaster continues, next week we anticipate the release of ‘Alien: Romulus,’ a reboot of the legendary horror/sci-fi franchise. Will it surpass the $50 million mark on its opening weekend? Stay tuned for updates, and we would love to hear your predictions in the comments!
