‘Deadpool 3’ Shuts Down Production Due to SAG-AFTRA Strike

Date:

The filming of “Deadpool 3” has reached a standstill due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, which has united performers and Writers Guild of America members on the picket lines. This strike marks the first significant impact on the production of the highly anticipated Marvel sequel.

Recently, fans were treated to a sneak peek of the movie, as a photo was released showing stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman reprising their roles as Deadpool and Wolverine, respectively. In addition, it was revealed that Jennifer Garner would be joining the cast as Elektra, a character she previously portrayed in 2003’s “Daredevil” and the 2005 spinoff film “Elektra.”

“Deadpool 3” reunites Ryan Reynolds with his “Free Guy” director, Shawn Levy. The film holds special significance as it will be the first entry in the series released under the Walt Disney Company following their acquisition of 21st Century Fox in 2019. The movie was initially scheduled for a theatrical release on May 3, 2024, but this timeline is now being determined due to the production suspension caused by the strike.

The Writers Guild of America approved a strike order back in May, ending operations for television programs such as NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” and various late-night talk shows. Surprisingly, “Deadpool 3” has continued production despite the ongoing writers’ strike until now. However, the sudden halt in filming is a stark reminder of the industry-wide impact the strike has on-screen actors and their work.

The SAG-AFTRA union advocates for wage equity and improved working conditions, representing approximately 160,000 performers, including actors, announcers, hosts, DJs, stunt performers, and broadcast journalists. These demands arise in the face of a rapidly evolving Hollywood landscape shaped by the rise of streaming platforms and artificial intelligence. Negotiations with SAG came to a close on July midnight PT, after a 12-day extension period following the expiration of contracts on June 30.

In conclusion, the pause in production for “Deadpool 3” underscores the significance of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, impacting the film industry. As negotiations continue, the future release date of the highly anticipated Marvel movie remains uncertain.
