Channing Tatum’s ‘Gambit’ Filming Delayed Until 2016

Date:

X-Men spinoff, Gambit, filming is delayed until 2016.

With so many superhero movies coming out in the next few years, it seems that it was only time that the release dates will change. Often times this happens with production issues, but occasionally this is because the films won’t be finished in time. This now seems to be the case for the Channing Tatum starring X-Men spinoff Gambit.

The X-Men spinoff was originally scheduled for an October 7th release, which would make it the third of three X-Men movies that Fox were releasing next year. However, producer Simon Kinberg has announced that Gambit won’t even start filming until next year, making a 2016 release damn near impossible.

In an interview with Collider, Kinberg discussed the search for a new director. “We have a director in and I don’t know if I’m allowed to say who it is yet because his deal isn’t done, but it’s somebody we’re excited about, and somebody I adore, and hopefully we can make an announcement soon about that,” he said. “But we’ve been spending a lot of time together–Channing, [Reid Carolin, Tatum’s producing partner], [screenwriter Joshua Zetumer], the director, and myself–just working on the script, and we hope to start shooting next spring.”

It was later revealed that the director of Gambit will be Doug Liman, the director of Edge of Tomorrow.

Pre-production on Gambit was delayed after the movie’s original director Rupert Wyatt left the movie in September. A report by The Hollywood Reporter suggested that it was due to creative differences and possible issues with casting Channing Tatum as the reason why he left.

In the Collider interview, Simon Kinberg also opened upon how Gambit will fit with the other X-Men movies and characters, which include Deadpool and the upcoming man X-Men series. “Deadpool obviously has a very different, almost antithetical tone to the mainline X-Men movies,” he said. “The X-Men movies are dramatic and almost operatic, whereas Deadpool is irreverent and hysterical and sort of a dirty R-rated comedy in many ways. And Gambit will have its own different flavor and tone to it, will be more of like a heist movie and a sexy thriller.”
