‘Modern Family‘ actress Sarah Hyland reveals her health battle with kidney dysplasia, endometriosis, and an abdominal hernia.
Actress Sarah Hyland is doing better after several serious medical issues that left her frequently traveling to hospitals.
The Modern Family actress had an interview with Self magazine where Hyland opened up about receiving not one but two kidney transplants. Hyland also openly discussed her battle with endometriosis — Endometriosis is a condition where tissue develops abnormally outside of the uterus.
Hyland suffered from kidney dysplasia. Her father donated his kidney for her daughter seven years ago. Then two years ago, Hyland revealed her body started rejecting the organ, which doctors had to remove in May 2017. Then, during the surgery doctors discovered she had an abdominal hernia.
“When a family member gives you a second chance at life, and it fails, it feels like your fault,” Hyland said. “And it’s not.”
The whole experience left the actress “very depressed,” and she admitted she even considered committing suicide.
“I had gone through 26 years of always being a burden, of always having to be looked after, having to be cared for because I’ve always had health issues. And it’s a really helpless feeling,” Sarah Hyland said. “Things like this can be really hard on a person.”
Hyland underwent dialysis from February to October 2017. During that time she discovered her younger brother was a match. Hyland would have her second transplant in September 2017. In 2018, she had surgery to treat her endometriosis and another surgery to repair her abdominal hernia. After six surgeries, Hyland says she is now “stable” and “super happy with life.”
What is Kidney Dysplasia?
- According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, Kidney dysplasia is a health condition where the internal structure of one or both of fetus’ kidney’s do not develop properly.
- “Urine collects inside the affected kidney and forms fluid-filled sacs called cysts. The cysts replace normal kidney tissue and prevent the kidney from functioning,” the government website says.
- As a result, children with dysplasia will only have one normally functioning kidney. Those with mild dysplasia may not need dialysis or a kidney transplant for a long time.
What is Endometriosis?
- According to UCLA Health, Endometriosis is when “when the tissue that makes up the uterine lining (the lining of the womb) is present on other organs inside your body.
- Endometriosis is usually found in the lower abdomen, or pelvis, but can appear anywhere in the body.” Some women with endometriosis will not have any symptoms.
- The disorder is considered common, and doctors diagnosis more than 200,000 US cases every year.
What is an Abdominal Hernia?
- A hernia occurs when an organ pushes through an opening in the muscle or tissue that holds the organ in place. Hernias are common in the abdomen, but can also appear in the legs, belly button and groin area.
