The decades-long wait for the continuation of a cult classic is over. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 fantastic film Beetlejuice, is expected to premier on September 6th. Beetlejuice, performed by Michael Keaton, may not be on the screen as often as some would expect. Yet, that could actually be a good thing!

The Gist on Beetlejuice’s Screen Time

In contrast to the original film where Beetlejuice drives the story, the sequel has him playing a role in the plotline. As Keaton understandably puts it, overloading the film with Beetlejuice wouldn’t do justice to the narrative, but instead spoil it. So, it’s less of Beetlejuice bursting onto the scene and more about blending in and contributing its unique color to the storyline.

Keaton, who also graced us with his vibrant performance in the original Beetlejuice film, advocated for this balanced approach of not over-packing the sequel with too much Beetlejuice. He believes the character should contribute to the story, not overpower it. In fact, he is confident that the sequel presents a stronger narrative than the first one.

The Journey to Beetlejuice Sequel

The journey to creating Beetlejuice Beetlejuice wasn’t a smooth sail. It took decades and numerous script revisions before reaching the final produced screenplay. Jonathan Gems initially attempted to write a sequel in 1990 titled Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, but it didn’t make it on film.

Even though there were considerable revisions by Pamela Norris and more planned by Kevin Smith and Daniel Waters, it still wasn’t enough. It required a fresh perspective in 2011 when Seth Grahame-Smith was asked to rewrite and produce a sequel version. Mike Vukadinovich was later brought onboard in 2017 to revise Grahame-Smith’s script, finally leading to an enticing reimagined sequel.

Shining Stars in the Sequel

Filming for the sequel began in London before moving across the pond to Vermont and Massachusetts. Co-written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar of Wednesday and produced by Brad Pitt’s Plan B, Beetlejuice 2 involves a star-studded cast.

Michael Keaton is back as the iconic character Beetlejuice, joined by other original cast members including Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz and Catherine O’Hara as Lydia’s stepmother, Delia. New faces include Jenna Ortega and Justin Theroux, playing Lydia’s daughter Astrid and Lydia’s fiancé Rory, respectively. Also starring are Monica Bellucci and Willem Dafoe, while Arthur Conti plays an unspecified role.

About the Sequel Story

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice reintroduces us to the Deetz family, who return to Winter River following an unforeseen family tragedy. Lydia’s life takes a dramatic turn when her rebellious daughter, Astrid, discovers the mystifying town model in the attic, accidentally opening the portal to the Afterlife. This chaotic event stirred troubles in both realms, and it’s only a matter of time until someone utters Beetlejuice’s name thrice, inciting his triumphant return.
