In early 2009, the first Avatar earned nearly $3 billion, and the studio immediately sought to take advantage of the buzz by releasing a sequel as soon as possible. Cameron was adamant in not wanting to skimp on quality, but he did confess that waiting 13 years after 2009’s massive hit worried him.

Cameron told the publication, “I was a little concerned that I had stretched the tether too far, in our fast-paced, modern world, with Avatar 2 coming in 12 years later.” However, he explained that while he was holding his breath, Cameron had a sigh of relief when he realized that people were still interested, “Right until we dropped the teaser , and we got 148 million views in 24 hours. There’s that scarce seen but wondered at principle, which is, ‘Wow, we haven’t seen that in a long time, but I remember how cool it was back then.’ Does that play in our favor? I don’t know. I guess we’re going to find out.”

The third Avatar will premiere in December 2024, with the fourth and fifth movies following two years later.

About Avatar:

Avatar is a 2009 American epic science fiction film directed, written, produced, and co-edited by James Cameron and stars Sam Worthington, , Stephen Lang, , and Sigourney Weaver. The film is set in the mid-22nd century when humans are colonizing Pandora, a lush habitable moon of a gas giant in the Alpha Centauri system, in order to mine the mineral unobtanium, a room-temperature superconductor. The expansion of the mining colony threatens the continued existence of a local tribe of Na’vi – a humanoid species indigenous to Pandora. The film’s title refers to its protagonist, Jake , a paraplegic former Marine who replaces his deceased identical twin brother, who was originally scheduled to participate in the Avatar Program.

Sully is fitted with an avatar body to give him the ability to walk and interact with the natives of Pandora. As he begins to bond with his avatar, Sully falls in love with a Na’vi woman named Neytiri. Upon learning of the colonists’ plan to mine Pandora’s resources, which will destroy the moon’s biosphere and render it uninhabitable, Jake joins the Na’vi in a quest to save their world.

The film became the first ever to gross over $2 billion worldwide and is currently the second highest-grossing film of all time, behind Cameron’s own Titanic. Avatar was nominated for nine , including Best Picture and Best Director, and won three, for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Visual Effects. Following the film’s success, Cameron signed on to direct four sequels: Avatar 2 (2021), Avatar 3 (2025), Avatar 4 (2028), and Avatar 5 (2031).
