Before the film’s world premiere, Brad Pitt (one of the film’s producers), de Armas, director Andrew Dominik, Adrien Brody, and Julianne Nicholson stirred excitement on the red carpet. This was largely due to Pitt, who wore a black Covid mask while working closely with fans to sign autographs and take selfies. His surprise appearance in Venice caught many off guards since he wasn’t present at the film’s press conference earlier that day. Dede Gardner (another of the “Blonde” producers) was also in attendance.
Regarding biopic dramas, one of the most anticipated titles at the Toronto International Film Festival is Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water, which stars de Armas as Hollywood legend Elisa. Brody also shed a tear or two. Pitt was visibly pleased by this news.
“Blonde” is a Hollywood biopic about Marilyn Monroe’s life, from her tumultuous childhood as Norma Jeane to the peak of her career. The supporting cast includes Bobby Cannavale, Brody, Nicholson, and Evan Williams. The movie premiered in competition at the Venice Film Festival.
Despite negative feedback from moviegoers on social media, “Blonde” has received praise ahead of its worldwide premiere. Following the release of an official trailer at the end of July, viewers criticized de Armas’ accent in the film. Most complaints about de Armas’ casting focused on her Cuban accent and failure to mimic Monroe’s breathy vocals. Despite not being involved in the production, the Marilyn Monroe estate defended de Armas’ casting.
“Marilyn Monroe is a singular Hollywood and pop culture icon that transcends generations and history,” said Marc Rosen, president of entertainment at Authentic Brands Group (ABG), which owns the Marilyn Monroe Estate. “Any actor that steps into that role knows they have big shoes to fill. Based on the trailer alone, it looks like Ana was a great casting choice as she captures Marilyn’s glamour, humanity, and vulnerability. We can’t wait to see the film in its entirety!”
De Armas revealed to The Times of London that it took her nearly a year to perfect Monroe’s voice for the film. The actor said, “It took me nine months of dialect coaching and practicing and some ADR sessions [to get the accent right]. It was a big torture, so exhausting. My brain was fried.”
Netflix’s new film “Blonde” will be available to stream worldwide on September 28th.
