Amazon Prime Video is Expanding into Africa’s Film Industry

Date:

Amazon Prime moves into Africa

Lagos, the largest city in Africa with an estimated population of more than 22 million people has just been given a new reason to smile.
Amazon Prime Video announced that it will be collaborating on three films at Nemsia Films which are expected to bring production value and job opportunities for locals while also showcasing Lagoda as one fantastic place worth living in.

The first Nemsia film under the agreement is the “Breath of Life.” The movie will be released this year and was written by BB Sasore with producing help from Eku Edewor. Nemsia Films is a haven for young and emerging talent in Nollywood. The company’s past productions include ‘God Calling,’ ‘Before 30’ and ‘Journey Of An African Colony’ which were all successful enough to win accolades at international film festivals.

Amazon Prime Video is an online video-on-demand service that is developed, owned, and operated by Amazon. It offers television shows and films for rent or purchase and Prime Video, a selection of Amazon Studios original content, and licensed acquisitions included in Amazon’s Prime subscription.
In December 2016, Amazon Prime Video launched in more than 200 countries. The service offers a growing library of award-winning Originals series and movies, including ‘Transparent,’ ‘The Grand Tour,’ ‘Mozart in the Jungle,’ and ‘The Man in the High Castle.’ Popular movies and TV shows are also available to rent or purchase from Amazon Instant Video. These include titles from Paramount, 20th Century Fox, Sony Pictures, and The Walt Disney Studios. In addition to buying or renting content, Amazon Prime Video users can also add channels like Showtime and Starz—though these must be purchased separately. The launch in Africa makes Amazon Prime Video available in a total of 240 countries and territories.

Amazon has not commented on how much the service will cost in Africa. However, given the company’s focus on emerging markets, it is likely that the pricing will be kept low to encourage adoption. In India, for example, Amazon Prime Video costs just Rs 999 ($15) per year.

The move into Africa is part of Amazon’s larger strategy to expand its Prime Video service globally. The company has been investing heavily in original content and recently announced that it would be making its first African original series.
