Chris Pine's Unfortunate Incident on Set

The Star Trek reboot series brought iconic characters Spock and Kirk back into the spotlight for a new generation. The revival was kicked off under the direction of J.J. Abrams. But, he stepped away from the 's chair for the third film, Star Trek Beyond. Though it experienced a successful run garnering over $343 million, the production didn't run as smoothly as it appeared on camera.

During the filming process, lead actor Chris Pine, embodying the character of James Kirk, had a minor mishap. While shooting a combat scene, co-star , who was portraying the villain Krall, inadvertently punched Pine, resulting in a visible black eye. Despite the accident, Pine soldiered on and finished the movie in true Kirk spirit.

Rapid Production: An Added Challenge

After Abrams moved on to managing the Star Wars trilogy, Justin Lin took over the helm for Star Trek Beyond. His role came with its set of challenges, not least of which was a significantly constrained timeline. Handling multiple complications, including an unforeseen on-set injury, Lin had his work cut out for him.

In comparison to its predecessor Star Trek: Into Darkness, critics largely viewed Star Trek Beyond as an upgrade. Appreciating the film's handling by Lin, the movie collected a commendable $343 million worldwide against a $185 million budget, as reported by Mojo.

Lin joined the following Roberto Orci's exit. Several directors, including and Rupert Wyatt, were considered before Lin was finally selected after declining a revisit to the Fast & Furious franchise.

Abrams appreciated Lin's vision for the film, but stipulated an accelerated production schedule. Lin shared in an interview with Josh Horowitz that the task was possibly the toughest of his career. He credited co- and actor Simon Pegg for being an invaluable support system throughout the process.

Despite the trials and tribulations of the production, Star Trek Beyond succeeds in serving its audience an impressive cinematic experience. The behind-the-scenes events only adding to the rich history of this iconic franchise. Star Trek Beyond is now available to stream on AMC+.
