Iconic Director David Lynch to Adopt Remote Directing Amidst Emphysema Health Challenge

Date:

Key Takeaways:

– Legendary director, David Lynch, confirms diagnosis with emphysema, resulting in a lifestyle adjustment.
– Lynch will now adopt remote-directing approach due to health reasons.
– New directing method does not deter him from creating new stories.

Beloved moviemaker extraordinaire, David Lynch, hasn’t helmed a feature-length film since his 2006 work, ‘Inland Empire’. Nevertheless, the artistic visionary has stayed active. He has been ever bustling, pumping out short films, directing a series of ‘Twin Peaks: The Return’ episodes and even venturing into music with Chrystabell for a new album called ‘Cellophane Memories’. However, there’s been a shift in Lynch’s directing style for a rather daunting reason – emphysema.

David Lynch Confirms Health Challenge

In a heart-rendering chat with Sight and Sound magazine, David Lynch revealed his health plight. Lynch, who now lives in relative isolation, confirmed he had emphysema from years of smoking. The unfortunate condition meant he could only walk short distances without running out of breath. The dire situation came as a downside of an artistic lifestyle that he once loved.

“Smoking was something that I absolutely adored. It was part of the art life for me! The tobacco, the smell of it, lighting things, having a smoke, and looking at my work, or simply reflecting. No other pastime could equate to its beauty. But, alas! The vice that was once charming was slowly extinguishing my life. I had to quit it.”

Facing the New Normal

With this health setback, coupled with the risks posed by COVID-19, David Lynch is necessitated to be homebound. The idea of returning to a film set seems a daunting thought. Hence, he now faces the inevitable task of directing from home. Albeit unexcited about the remote-directing idea, he is resolved to give it a shot if the situation calls for it.

“I probably would be directing from my house due to COVID-19”, Lynch says, “fortunately, they’ve now invented ways you can direct from home.”

Unwavering Passion for Storytelling

Despite the health challenge, the talented director’s love for storytelling is far from over. He remains hopeful about the future, uncertain as it may be.

“We don’t know what the future will bring, but we stay hopeful”, says Lynch. His comments have reignited fans’ hope to see more of his phenomenal storytelling unfold on the screen—be it in ‘Snootworld’, more ‘Twin Peaks’ episodes, or a fresh movie named ‘Antelope Don’t Run No More’, a script he penned post ‘Inland Empire’.

Cheery news for his fans is that Lynch still aims to bring more stories to life, even if that requires entrusting projects to other directors.

Looking up to John Carpenter’s Success

As Lynch forges ahead towards remote directing, he could follow in the footsteps of John Carpenter. The acclaimed director relished his experience in directing the TV series ‘Suburban Screams’ remotely and found it successful. Perhaps this could serve as a motivating example for Lynch.

So, are you excited to see David Lynch take on remote-directing despite his health setbacks? Your thoughts on this recent development are eagerly anticipated! Leave your thoughts and wishes for this icon in the comments below.
