Audition Tips

Auditioning for a different role is different than auditioning for a lead. As an extra, you will need to fill out the scene, provide atmosphere, and add background support to the action. Here are some tips to keep in mind when auditioning for extras:

  1. Be prepared. Familiarize yourself with the script and the show you are auditioning for. The more knowledge and understanding you have of the project, the better your performance and chances of selection.
  2. Dress to impress. For most different roles, dress nicely but casually. Wear comfortable clothing appropriate for the scene, such as a shirt and jeans or a dress shirt with slacks. Avoid wearing overly distracting colors or patterns that may draw attention away from the leading actors.
  3. Act naturally. Many extras take their role seriously and don’t treat it like an acting job; they approach it as part of something bigger than them by providing atmosphere and background support to what’s happening on screen. If you find yourself in a position where you’re asked to do something that deviates from your natural behavior, be sure to speak up and let the director know.
  4. Be flexible. As an extra, you will likely have to take direction from the crew or producers on set for various tasks, such as walking a particular route, standing in a specific spot, etc. Make sure you stay flexible and willing to make changes on the fly if required.
  5. Follow up with casting directors. After completing your audition, reach out to the casting director or production team with a personalized note expressing your appreciation and interest in their project. This is important if you hope to be considered for future roles or other opportunities within the industry. Doing so shows professionalism and initiative – two qualities that are always appreciated.
