After a remarkable decade within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Anthony Mackie is poised to embrace his superhero destiny once more in “Captain America: Brave New World,” stepping into the iconic role left vacant by Chris Evans after the events of “Avengers: Endgame.” Although taking on the mantle of Captain America for the first time, Mackie found a sense of familiarity while crafting “Captain America 4.”
The actor shared with TheWrap, in an interview preceding the SAG-AFTRA strike, that the film’s production brought him back full circle to his early Marvel experiences. “It was quite nostalgic to shoot ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ in Washington D.C., at the hotel where ‘Winter Soldier’ scenes were filmed,” Mackie explained. He reminisced about his initial Marvel moments, including a scene alongside Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson, noting that the same locations held significance. “Contemplating how far my character has evolved over these past ten years in the MCU was truly moving.”
Regarding the filming process, Mackie spoke of his immense pleasure from working on the set. “Being on the set was an incredible experience, and having the opportunity to indulge in a cigar and whiskey with my colleagues as the sun rises, right outside the White House, was simply fantastic,” he added.
The Marvel filmmaking realm has evolved into something akin to a summer camp for Mackie. “Reuniting with individuals I’ve known and worked with for a decade or more, people who’ve seen milestones such as marriage, parenthood, and home ownership, it genuinely feels like a reunion with old friends,” he expressed. “This production was no different; the camaraderie and ease were palpable. I felt completely at home.”
Mackie’s co-star in the movie, Harrison Ford, an 80-year-old debutant in the MCU, left a remarkable impression on the actor. Contrary to expectations, Ford’s presence was light-hearted and joyful, displaying genuine excitement to be part of the cinematic universe. “Interacting with Harrison was an absolute pleasure. Witnessing someone with decades of experience in the industry, like him, thrilled to join this universe was an eye-opener. It emphasized our fortune to bring these characters to life,” Mackie remarked.
The interaction between Mackie and Ford wasn’t without its moments of awe and humility. “Sharing scenes with Harrison Ford was surreal, especially when we stumbled over lines or had tongue-tied moments,” Mackie chuckled. “But soon we realized Ford is just as cool and relatable as anyone else, making those scenes flow smoothly.”
Directed by Julius Onah and with a screenplay by Malcolm Spellman, the mind behind “Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” “Captain America: Brave New World,” is scheduled to premiere on July 26, 2024. In the meantime, audiences can catch Anthony Mackie in Peacock’s adaptation of the popular video game, “Twisted Metal.”
In summary, Anthony Mackie’s journey through the Marvel universe reaches a pinnacle with “Captain America: Brave New World” as he steps into the Captain America role, finding both nostalgia and camaraderie on set. The unexpected connection with veteran actor Harrison Ford adds a layer of excitement, while the film’s release date heightens anticipation for this next chapter in the MCU.
