CBS has ordered a series adaptation of James Cameron’s 1994 film, which the network has worked on for over a year. The update counts the filmmaker as an executive producer.
Like the movie starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Arnold Schwarzenegger, the CBS show will follow an unfulfilled suburban homemaker who discovers her boring computer consultant husband is a skilled international spy. She’s then recruited to work alongside him to save the world and try to revitalize their passionless marriage.
In this film, Steve Howey (Shameless) and Ginger Gonzaga (I’m Dying Up Here, Marvel’s upcoming She-Hulk) play the roles that Curtis and Schwarzenegger made famous. They are joined by Erica Hernandez, Omar Miller, Mike O’Gorman, Annabella Didion, and Lucas Jaye.
Matt Nix wrote the pilot script and served as showrunner, while Anthony Hemingway directed the pilot. Both men executive produce alongside Cameron and Rae Sanchini, his partner in Lightstorm Entertainment. McG, Mary Viola, and Corey Marsh of Wonderland Sound and Vision collaborate with Nix and Josh Levy of Flying Glass of Milk Productions. Sean Hoagland and Whitney Davis are co-executive producers.
True Lies is from 20th Television, making it one of the Mouse House’s first off-network sales in a while and CBS’ sole new series from an external studio. According to sources, true Lies is being looked at for the network’s midseason lineup.
CBS ordered the True Lies pilot in February 2021 to air it this past broadcast cycle. A month later, the project was delayed so that producers — including Cameron, who wrote and directed the film — may have more time to work on it. The pilot was shot last fall after Howey completed his 11-season Showtime series Shameless.
The newest effort to bring True Lies to television is this. In 2017, Fox produced an update with Arrow’s Marc Guggenheim writing the script. It never got off the ground. McG announced in 2019 that a True Lies TV series was under production for Disney+ in 2019
CBS has ordered True Lies as their fourth drama series for the 2022-23 broadcast season, and it joins East New York, Fire Country, and So Help Me, Todd on the network’s schedule. The move came after CBS canceled a pair of Chuck Lorre comedies (B Positive, United States of Al) while also giving rookie half-hour How We Roll the ax. Consequently, next season CBS will only have four comedy shows on their schedule: Bob Hearts Abishola, Young Sheldon, The Neighborhood, and breakout Ghosts.
