The cast of the film will include Adam Driver, who played Kylo Ren in the latest Star Wars trilogy, along with Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel (Game of Thrones), Jon Voight, who previously worked with Coppola on Rainmaker and Apocalypse Now, and Laurence Fishburne, all of whom have collaborated with Coppola before.
One of the most renowned filmmakers in history, Coppola is known for bringing to life some of the greatest films ever made, such as The Godfather and Apocalypse Now. Development for Megalopolis started in the 1980s. The film is about an architect who tries to rebuild New York City after a city-wide disaster. With all of the development and an acclaimed cast, this could be Coppola’s sendoff film.
In addition to the current cast of the film, there have been reports that Oscar Isaac, Cate Blanchett, Jessica Lange, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Zendaya are in talks to star in Megalopolis. However, it’s unclear if they’re still involved in the project. It is also reported that James Caan was negotiating to star in the film before his death. The film would be delayed until 2001 due to various circumstances, including good hints for the picture as Coppola began filming over 30 hours of second-unit footage. However, when the September 11 attacks occurred later that year, the film was pushed back even further, necessitating a complete reworking project.
Despite nearly 20 years, Coppola is still dedicated to Megalopolis and is now readying the long-gestating film for release. Coppola will be self-financing the film, allowing him to complete his long-held passion project. It’s uncertain whether 40 years of waiting was worth it, but Coppola in command may be a fantastic way to bid farewell to one of cinema’s legendary directors.
The film is still in production, and no release date has been set. Check out our interview with Driver from House of Gucci below:
