Viola Davis will star as Harriet Tubman in the upcoming HBO biopic.
Oscar-nominated and Emmy Award winning actress, Viola Davis is set to play Harriet Tubman in a HBO biopic based on Kate Clifford Larson’s biography Bound for the Promised Land: Harriet Tubman: Portrait of an American Hero.
The movie will focus on Harriet Tubman’s legacy of freeing slaves and a leader in the abolitionist community. Viola Davis’s character will showcase Tubman’s history of taking slaves through the Underground Railroad in an effort to free them, as well as her time spent with the Union during the Civil War.
The air date for the project has not been released and casting for other lead roles is still underway.
The HBO miniseries, which Variety reports is likely to film during Viola Davis’ hiatus next year from How to Get Away with Murder, will be written by John Adams’s Kirk Ellis, and produced byEntourage’s Doug Ellin.
Ever since Viola Davis was nominated for an Oscar, Davis’ career has been on fire. In fact, she’s expected to work alongside Will Smith and Margot Robbie in the upcoming DC comic movie Suicide Squad.
