Synopsis:
“Hester Street” is a deeply moving stage adaptation set in the late 19th century Lower East Side, New York. It follows Gitl, a young Jewish immigrant from Eastern Europe, as she navigates a new world with her son, encountering challenges in her marriage and the American way of life. The play, filled with humor, heartbreak, and hope, captures the essence of the Jewish immigrant experience.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  1. Jake Podkovnik: (Male, 25-37, Jewish) A Russian immigrant with a mix of toxic and charming masculinity. Struggling with his identity in America. Non-singing role.

  2. Gitl Podkovnik: (Female, 20-35, Jewish) A religious young mother, freshly arrived from Russia. Optimistic and charismatic, she faces cultural and personal challenges. Non-singing role.

  3. Mrs. Kavarsky: (Female, 30s-60, Jewish) Independent and humorous landlady. Non-singing role.

  4. Bernstein: (Male, 25-40, Jewish) A gentle scholar, adapting to American life. Non-singing role.

  5. Mamie: (Female, 20-40, Jewish) Young, beautiful, and complex. Ambitious and sympathetic towards Gitl. Non-singing role.

  6. Joe Peltner: (Male, 30-60, Jewish) A talented pianist and singer, leading the band. Quirky and lively. Accordion skills a plus.
