Bluesky Reaches 25 Million Users as Migration from X Continues

Bluesky, a rising social media platform, has reached 25 million users as of early Friday morning. The platform has gained over 10 million users since U.S. Election Day, reflecting steady growth fueled by users seeking alternatives to X, formerly known as Twitter.

According to Bluesky CEO Jay Graber, the platform had 6 million users in late August. This figure grew to nearly 11 million by late October, then 15 million on November 15. Bluesky added another 5 million users in just five days, reaching 20 million by November 19. Growth has slowed slightly in recent weeks, but the platform continues to expand.

Competitors like Meta-owned Threads have adopted some of Bluesky’s features, but Bluesky remains on an upward path, largely due to dissatisfaction with X. Many users have left X citing issues such as bot activity, extreme content, cryptocurrency scams, excessive ads, and the spread of misinformation. Other complaints include the site’s handling of sensitive topics, including racism and transphobia.

Bluesky’s credibility has grown as media organizations, companies, sports teams, and public figures have created accounts on the platform. These additions have helped position Bluesky as a legitimate alternative in the social media landscape.

Initially launched as an invite-only platform in February 2023, Bluesky became fully public in February 2024. Its growth accelerated in the latter half of 2024, driven by the presidential election and increasing dissatisfaction with X. The platform was originally founded in 2019 by then-Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, who stepped away from the project in 2022.

Unreleased Michael Jackson Tapes Found in Abandoned Storage Unit

A stay-at-home dad in Ventura County has uncovered a rare collection of unreleased Michael Jackson recordings from the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Gregg Musgrove, a former California Highway Patrol officer turned full-time parent, never expected his hobby of buying storage units would lead him to a treasure trove of unreleased tracks by the King of Pop. The discovery came when Musgrove acquired a storage unit in Van Nuys, California, previously owned by music producer and singer Bryan Loren, whose current whereabouts are unknown.

The storage unit contained cassette and DAT tapes featuring 12 unreleased songs recorded by Jackson between 1989 and 1991, during the early phases of his work on the album Dangerous. According to Musgrove, some of the tracks had been rumored among fans, while others had never been mentioned or leaked.

“I’ve gone through all the fan sites. Some of these songs are known, but a few are completely unheard of,” Musgrove told The Hollywood Reporter. “Hearing Michael Jackson talk and joke during the recording process gave me goosebumps.”

Musgrove’s inventory includes unreleased songs and snippets of additional tracks, accompanied by discussions between Jackson and Loren about their creative process. Among the songs is “Don’t Believe It,” which appears to address the media rumors that surrounded Jackson. Another track, “Seven Digits,” references the identification numbers used in morgues, with Jackson explaining its meaning in detail.

One of the most unique recordings is “Truth on Youth,” a rap duet between Jackson and LL Cool J. The rapper has previously confirmed working with Jackson, and this song highlights Jackson’s rare venture into rapping.

Despite the excitement surrounding the tapes, fans hoping to hear them may be disappointed. Musgrove approached the Jackson Estate earlier this year, but the Estate declined to purchase the recordings. While they provided Musgrove with a letter confirming that they do not claim ownership of the physical tapes, they emphasized that the copyright for the music remains with the Estate. This means the recordings cannot be released commercially.

A representative for the Estate clarified that the recordings on the tapes are not new discoveries. “The Estate of Michael Jackson was presented with DAT copies, not master recordings. The master recordings are already housed in the Estate’s vaults,” the representative said. “Ownership and rights to exploit the recordings remain with MJJP Records, and no commercial use can be made of the copies.”

Musgrove and his team estimate the collection’s value to be in the seven-figure range. He plans to take the tapes to major auction houses, hoping to attract collectors of Michael Jackson memorabilia. High-profile collectors, such as Lady Gaga, who has purchased dozens of Jackson items at auction, may find the tapes appealing for private ownership.

Currently, the tapes are stored in a secure facility managed by Musgrove’s attorney.

This story first appeared in the Dec. 13 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.

Karin Slaughter’s ‘The Good Daughter’ with Rose Byrne to Film in Atlanta

A new TV series, “The Good Daughter,” is set to begin filming in metro Atlanta in early 2025. The drama is based on Karin Slaughter’s 2017 bestselling novel and will air as a limited series on Peacock.

Production is scheduled to start on March 18 and wrap by the end of June, according to IATSE 479, the union representing most crew members. Actress Rose Byrne is attached to the project, though no other cast members have been announced.

Jessica Biel, initially tied to the series, left the project earlier this year.

Byrne, known for her roles in Damages, Bridesmaids, Neighbors, and Physical, has previously worked in Atlanta. She filmed Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising in the area in 2015.

While the union confirmed the series will be shot in Atlanta, the specific studio location has not been disclosed. Recent Peacock productions in the area include Fight Night and Teacup at Assembly Studios in Doraville, as well as Hysteria! at Three Ring Studios in Covington.

Slaughter, an Atlanta-based author, has seen her work adapted for screen before. Her book series Will Trent inspired the ABC drama of the same name, which stars Ramon Rodriguez and Erika Christensen. That show returns for its third season on January 7. Another of her books, Pieces of Her, was adapted into a Netflix limited series starring Toni Collette in 2022.

“The Good Daughter” centers on two sisters, Charlotte and Samantha, who are grappling with the aftermath of their mother’s murder 28 years earlier. When a new violent attack occurs in the present, Charlotte—now a lawyer and the first witness—must confront her past as the case reveals shocking truths.

Amazon Questions Influencers Over Paid Reviews Crackdown

Amazon has started asking influencers about product reviews they’ve shared on social media platforms, including YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. This move signals Amazon’s growing focus on curbing paid reviews, according to a report by Bloomberg on Wednesday (Dec. 11).

The report states that Amazon sent questionnaires to influencers, inquiring about their interactions with product sellers. One example question asked, “Can you describe the work you’ve done for this seller as an influencer (e.g. posted videos on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, etc.)?”

This initiative aligns with a new Federal Trade Commission (FTC) rule, which bans businesses from paying for consumer reviews. The rule, effective since October, also empowers the FTC to impose civil penalties of $51,744 per violation. The regulation specifically targets deceptive practices such as buying fake reviews or using AI-generated feedback.

Paid reviews are not new, but influencer marketing has amplified the issue. Many influencers earn money promoting products without disclosing their relationships with the companies behind them, Bloomberg noted.

Details remain unclear about how Amazon selects influencers for the questionnaires, how it will use their responses, or how effective this approach will be. Influencers are not obligated to answer the questions.

Amazon has been ramping up its efforts against fake reviews. In October, the company revealed it had blocked over 250 million suspected fake reviews in 2023 alone and filed lawsuits against more than 150 fake review brokers.

“Product reviews are central to the Amazon shopping experience,” the company said. “They provide customers with valuable insights and honest opinions from other shoppers. Amazon is committed to ensuring the reliability of reviews to help consumers make informed decisions.”

Super Bowl Halftime Controversy: Jay-Z, Roc Nation, and the NFL

0

Rapper Jay-Z may face challenges ahead of the 2025 Super Bowl, according to speculation sparked by 50 Cent. Over the weekend, 50 Cent posted a meme on Instagram, poking fun at Jay-Z and referencing recent allegations against him. The post, a screenshot from 50 Cent’s cameo on HBO’s Entourage, carried the caption: “Ok I don’t know what’s going on, but are we gonna still have the Super Bowl. 😟 I’m just asking for a friend!”

The joke hinges on knowledge of Jay-Z’s connection to the Super Bowl halftime show. His company, Roc Nation, has produced the show since 2020, transforming it into a platform for diverse musical acts. But Jay-Z now faces a civil lawsuit accusing him and Sean “Diddy” Combs of assaulting a 13-year-old girl. The allegations, denied by both men, have drawn significant attention, raising questions about Roc Nation’s partnership with the NFL.

Roc Nation’s Super Bowl Legacy

Roc Nation has reshaped the halftime show, moving away from its rock and country roots to feature prominent artists like Rihanna (2023) and Usher (2024). In partnership with Apple, the production has attracted record-breaking audiences and generated millions in advertising revenue. The NFL’s focus on avoiding controversy, especially after incidents like Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction, underscores the high stakes of the collaboration.

With Super Bowl LIX set for February 9, 2025, in New Orleans, questions linger about whether Jay-Z’s legal troubles could affect Roc Nation’s involvement. Kendrick Lamar is slated to headline the show, but public opinion could sway the NFL’s decisions.

Jay-Z’s Response to the Allegations

In a statement posted to Roc Nation’s social media account, Jay-Z denied the accusations and accused attorney Tony Buzbee, representing the plaintiff, of attempting extortion. The statement urged the accuser to file a criminal complaint if the allegations were genuine, emphasizing the need for “real justice.”

Jay-Z’s lawyer, Alex Spiro, also dismissed the claims, labeling them a “shakedown” and stating that Jay-Z is not involved in any criminal investigation related to Combs. Jay-Z has filed a lawsuit against Buzbee, accusing him of extortion. Meanwhile, Buzbee alleges a coordinated effort to intimidate him and his clients.

Potential Fallout

Critics on social media have called for Jay-Z’s removal from his NFL role. Despite this, the NFL’s contract with Roc Nation, renewed in October, appears secure for now. Anonymous sources told the Associated Press that the league has no plans to alter its relationship with Roc Nation amid ongoing legal proceedings.

Broader Implications

The controversy highlights the fragility of high-profile partnerships in the face of public scrutiny. While Roc Nation’s work with the NFL has been described as “mutually positive,” any significant backlash could force the league to reevaluate its stance. For now, the Super Bowl halftime show remains on track, with Roc Nation at the helm.

As the case unfolds, the outcome will likely influence both Jay-Z’s personal reputation and Roc Nation’s future with the NFL.

Peacock Developing ‘Friday Night Lights’ Reboot

A new version of the high school football drama Friday Night Lights is in the works at Peacock, the streaming platform owned by NBCUniversal.

Peacock secured the project after a competitive bidding process. Universal Television, which produced the original 2006-2011 series, has been developing the reboot but hadn’t found a network or platform until now.

Key figures from the original show are returning for the reboot. Peter Berg, who created and directed the pilot, Jason Katims, the original showrunner, and Brian Grazer of Imagine Entertainment will serve as executive producers. Kristen Zolner from Imagine Entertainment will also produce, with Katims once again taking on the role of showrunner.

The new series will follow a high school football team in a Texas town recovering from a devastating hurricane. Led by a struggling interim coach, the team aims to compete for a state championship, bringing hope to their community. This setting likely shifts the story away from Dillon, Texas, the fictional town featured in the original series, which was not located near the Gulf Coast.

Friday Night Lights originated as a 1990 nonfiction book by H.G. “Buzz” Bissinger about the Permian High School football team in Odessa, Texas. Peter Berg adapted the book into a 2004 film before creating the NBC series.

The original show starred Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton, along with Jesse Plemons, Taylor Kitsch, Zach Gilford, Minka Kelly, Gaius Charles, Scott Porter, Aimee Teegarden, Adrianne Palicki, and Michael B. Jordan. It served as a career launchpad for many cast members.

Although the series was never a ratings hit, it gained critical acclaim and a devoted fan base. Friday Night Lights won three Emmy Awards, including Best Lead Actor for Chandler and Best Writing for Katims in its final season.

The reboot’s development was first reported by Deadline.

Disney Announces Live-Action ‘Tangled’ with Director Michael Gracey

Disney is moving forward with a live-action adaptation of Tangled.

The new version will revisit the 2010 animated musical based on the Brothers Grimm tale of Rapunzel, a princess with enchanted, long hair. Michael Gracey, known for directing The Greatest Showman, is in talks to lead the project. The script is being written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, whose past work includes Netflix’s Do Revenge, Thor: Love and Thunder, and the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot. Casting details have not been announced.

The original Tangled followed Rapunzel, voiced by Mandy Moore, as she escaped her tower with the help of a charming outlaw, Flynn Rider. Released around Thanksgiving in 2010, the movie earned $592 million worldwide. However, its success was tempered by a reported production budget of $260 million. The film featured the Oscar-nominated song “When Will My Life Begin” and inspired the 2012 short Tangled Ever After and the TV series Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure.

Gracey made his directorial debut with 2017’s The Greatest Showman, a musical about P.T. Barnum starring Hugh Jackman. Although it had a slow start at the box office, the film became a sleeper hit, grossing over $450 million worldwide. Gracey is also working on Better Man, a semi-autobiographical film about British musician Robbie Williams, with a chimpanzee portraying Williams.

Disney has produced live-action versions of several animated classics, including The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Mulan, Dumbo, and The Little Mermaid, with varying box office results. Future releases include Snow White and Lilo & Stitch in 2025, as well as Moana in 2026, with Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as Maui.

The news of Gracey’s involvement in Tangled was first reported by Deadline Hollywood.

Austin Butler in Talks to Star as Patrick Bateman in Luca Guadagnino’s ‘American Psycho’

Austin Butler is in discussions to lead Luca Guadagnino’s new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s novel “American Psycho,” produced by Lionsgate.

Earlier rumors suggested Jacob Elordi was being considered for the role of Patrick Bateman, but that casting did not materialize. Both Elordi and Butler have portrayed Elvis Presley in recent films, with Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla” featuring Elordi and Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” starring Butler.

The upcoming film, written by Scott Z. Burns (“The Laundromat”), is a fresh adaptation of the novel, not a remake of the 2000 movie. Guadagnino’s version may explore different aspects of the story, possibly adding a stronger focus on its erotic elements. Guadagnino, known for “Call Me by Your Name,” “Challengers,” and “Queer,” has previously worked in genre films like “Suspiria” and “Bones and All.”

In the original film, Christian Bale played Patrick Bateman, a Wall Street executive and serial killer in 1980s Manhattan. Guadagnino’s approach could offer a new perspective on Bateman’s character, differing significantly from previous portrayals.

While Butler’s casting has not been finalized, sources indicate an offer is expected soon.

Guadagnino recently completed “After the Hunt” with Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield. His last two films, “Queer” and “Challengers,” earned multiple Golden Globe nominations. Daniel Craig received a nomination for Best Actor in “Queer,” while Zendaya’s performance in “Challengers” is up for Best Actress. “Challengers” also received nods for Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) and Best Original Score.

6 Shocking Actor Injuries During Casting in the Entertainment Industry

0

Hollywood might look glamorous, but behind the scenes, it can be a grueling and sometimes dangerous place. Casting processes often require actors to push their limits, sometimes leading to serious injuries. The entertainment industry is rife with stories of dedication and sacrifice, and these six actors paid a painful price during auditions or screen tests, proving their unwavering commitment to their craft.

1. Tom Cruise – “The Last Samurai”

Tom Cruise is known for performing his own stunts, but even during the casting and rehearsal phase for The Last Samurai, he faced danger. While practicing a sword-fighting sequence with co-star Hiroyuki Sanada, a mechanical malfunction caused a near-fatal accident. Sanada’s sword narrowly missed Cruise’s neck due to a mistimed block—an incident that could have ended very differently. This episode underscores the inherent risks of rehearsals in the entertainment industry, where precision and timing are critical.

Cruise’s dedication to physical preparation and authenticity has made him a Hollywood icon. This event is a reminder of the thin line between artistic excellence and personal safety in casting and rehearsal settings.

2. Charlize Theron – “Aeon Flux”

Theron’s commitment to physical roles is well-known, and during the screen tests for Aeon Flux, she sustained a neck injury that nearly ended her career. A miscalculated backflip resulted in her landing awkwardly, causing a herniated disk. The injury required intensive physical therapy and delayed production for several weeks.

This incident highlights the physical demands casting can place on actors, especially for action-packed roles. It also showcases how the entertainment industry pushes performers to their physical and mental limits, demanding a balance between preparation and safety.

3. Leonardo DiCaprio – “Django Unchained”

Although this injury occurred during filming rather than casting, it’s too dramatic to leave off the list. During his audition-like improvisation for a pivotal scene in Django Unchained, DiCaprio accidentally smashed a glass with his hand. Staying in character, he continued the scene despite bleeding profusely, earning praise for his professionalism and ultimately securing the role.

The casting and preparation process in the entertainment industry often blurs the line between performance and reality. DiCaprio’s willingness to stay immersed in the scene, despite physical pain, speaks volumes about his dedication as an actor.

4. Linda Hamilton – “Terminator 2: Judgment Day”

Linda Hamilton’s transformation into Sarah Connor required intense physical preparation. However, during early stunt rehearsals, Hamilton suffered permanent hearing loss in one ear. A scene involving a gun fired too close to her head caused the injury, showcasing the sometimes unpredictable dangers of action-heavy auditions and rehearsals.

This injury underscores how casting and rehearsals in the entertainment industry can have long-term physical consequences. Despite this, Hamilton delivered a powerful performance that cemented her legacy as one of Hollywood’s strongest female action stars.

5. Halle Berry – “Die Another Day”

Berry’s audition for the Bond film Die Another Day involved a high-risk action scene. During one test, a stunt involving pyrotechnics went awry, resulting in minor burns and an eye injury. While she recovered fully, the incident highlights the potential risks actors face even before securing a role.

The casting process often places actors in challenging situations, pushing them to prove their readiness for demanding roles. This accident also emphasizes the importance of stringent safety measures, especially in high-stakes auditions involving special effects.

6. Jackie Chan – Multiple Films

Jackie Chan’s injuries are legendary, but his casting and rehearsal phases are equally perilous. For Police Story, one of Chan’s most iconic roles, he performed a dangerous stunt during early tests that resulted in a dislocated pelvis. His commitment to realism has left him with countless scars, proving his willingness to endure pain for the sake of art.

Chan’s dedication serves as a benchmark in the entertainment industry. His experiences underscore the extraordinary risks some actors take during casting and preparation to ensure their performances are as authentic as possible.

The Cost of Casting Excellence

The dedication of actors to their craft often goes unnoticed, but these stories highlight the extreme lengths some go to in pursuit of authenticity. Injuries during casting and rehearsals remind us of the physical and emotional toll the entertainment industry can demand. These tales not only demonstrate the resilience and passion of Hollywood’s finest but also serve as a testament to the high stakes involved in creating cinematic magic.

In an industry driven by competition and perfection, actors often put their bodies on the line during casting and preparation. As the entertainment industry continues to evolve, prioritizing safety while maintaining artistic integrity remains crucial. These stories are a powerful reminder of the bravery and commitment that go into every iconic performance.

Hulu’s scripted series about Murdaugh murders will be produced in Atlanta

Hulu’s Murdaugh Murders Series Starring Jason Clarke and Patricia Arquette to Film in Atlanta

Hulu’s highly anticipated scripted series about the infamous Murdaugh family murders is set to begin production in Atlanta in March 2025. The series, which will delve into the crimes and controversies surrounding the prominent South Carolina family, has cast Jason Clarke and Patricia Arquette in the lead roles.

Production Details
The series will be filmed at Doraville’s Assembly Studios, a growing hub for major productions in the Atlanta area. According to a notice sent to IATSE 479 members, the union representing crew members in the region, the tentative production schedule spans from March 3 through June 13, 2025. Assembly Studios is also hosting other major productions, including NBC’s Grosse Pointe Garden Society and CBS’s Beyond the Gates.

The Story and Cast
Jason Clarke, known for standout performances in Oppenheimer and HBO’s Winning Time, will portray Alex Murdaugh. Murdaugh, a once-powerful South Carolina attorney, was convicted of murdering his wife and son in 2021 and is serving a life sentence. Alongside these crimes, Murdaugh admitted to stealing millions from his law firm and clients but continues to deny the murder charges, appealing his convictions.

Academy Award-winner Patricia Arquette will play Maggie Murdaugh, Alex’s wife. Arquette is celebrated for her roles in Medium, Severance, and critically acclaimed films such as Boyhood and True Romance.

The series, based on reporting by Mandy Matney, the journalist behind the popular Murdaugh Murders Podcast, will explore the family’s deep legal and political influence in South Carolina’s Lowcountry. Over the years, the Murdaughs faced allegations of fraud, corruption, and violent crimes, culminating in the shocking double homicide that captivated national attention.

Background on the Murdaugh Story
The Murdaughs were once a revered family in South Carolina, wielding significant power in the legal and political arenas. However, their fall from grace has been the subject of widespread media attention, including Netflix’s hit documentary The Murdaugh Murders and Lifetime’s dramatization The Murdaugh Murders: A Movie.

Why Atlanta?
Atlanta continues to solidify its reputation as a top filming destination in the United States, thanks to its generous tax incentives, world-class production facilities, and experienced crew base. With the production of Hulu’s Murdaugh series, Atlanta’s status as a hub for high-profile TV projects is further cemented.

Looking Ahead
With a gripping true-crime storyline and powerhouse performances from Jason Clarke and Patricia Arquette, Hulu’s Murdaugh Murders series is poised to become a must-watch. Filming begins in 2025, and viewers can expect a deep dive into one of the most scandalous family sagas in recent history.

Anne Hathaway Joins Christopher Nolan’s New Film, Credits Him with Revitalizing Her Career

Anne Hathaway has been confirmed to star in her third Christopher Nolan movie, a mysterious new project set to release on July 17, 2026, under Universal Pictures. Hathaway shared her excitement with Women’s Wear Daily, saying, “It makes me feel like I’m doing something right.”

Hathaway first collaborated with Nolan as Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises and later played Dr. Amelia Brand in the critically acclaimed sci-fi epic Interstellar. She now joins an all-star cast, including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron, in Nolan’s highly anticipated follow-up to the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer.

“I love Chris and Emma Nolan so much, and to be invited into their world [is] one of the best places you can find yourself,” Hathaway said, referring to the director and producer duo Christopher and Emma Nolan. “Getting to be invited twice really felt like something. Three felt like it would’ve been greedy… and that it has [happened] makes me emotional.”

Nolan’s Role in Revitalizing Hathaway’s Career

Hathaway has openly credited Nolan for helping her career during a challenging period. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Hathaway recalled the online backlash she faced during the Oscar season for Les Misérables, which led to her winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. At the time, public opinion had turned against her, and she discovered an article titled, “Why does everyone hate Anne Hathaway?” when Googling herself after her win.

“A lot of people wouldn’t give me roles because they were so concerned about how toxic my identity had become online,” Hathaway told Vanity Fair. “I had an angel in Christopher Nolan, who did not care about that and gave me one of the most beautiful roles I’ve had in one of the best films that I’ve been a part of.”

Nolan cast Hathaway as Dr. Amelia Brand in Interstellar, which she describes as “vitalizing, reviving, encouraging, and just a gift in that moment.” She emphasized that the role not only rejuvenated her career but also served as a profound personal experience. “The moment I got to go into that world… was the safest and most exhilarating place I could ever be as an actor and as a human,” she said.

A Star-Studded Cast Expresses Their Excitement

Hathaway isn’t the only actor thrilled to join Nolan’s latest endeavor. Tom Holland, another member of the ensemble cast, told Good Morning America that receiving the offer was the “phone call of a lifetime,” comparing it to when he first got cast as Spider-Man. “It’s an amazing thing for me. I’m super proud and really, really excited,” Holland said.

What We Know About Nolan’s New Movie

While the plot and title remain under wraps, the untitled project is written and directed by Nolan and is set to begin filming in early 2025. The star-studded cast, along with Nolan’s reputation for crafting cinematic masterpieces, has already generated significant buzz in the entertainment world.

With Hathaway’s glowing praise and heartfelt gratitude, her return to Nolan’s cinematic universe marks another milestone in their enduring collaboration. Fans eagerly await further updates on what promises to be one of the most anticipated films of 2026.
