Criminally Charged Casting Directors Launch Fundraiser

0

After an investigation into the casting workshop business in Los Angeles by the Hollywood Reporter several casting directors face scrutiny, jail time, and now class action lawsuits. The investigation, trial and possible jail time is a lot to take it for anybody regardless if you are in the entertainment industry or not. Aforementioned is not only mentally exhausting for someone this can also be financially exhausting.

It all started after the Hollywood reporter investigated into pay to play acting workshops. According to the report, these acting classes are connected to nearly every broadcast TV show. In fact, many new actors are paying $1500 a year to pay for two or three workshop classes a month. The goal is to obtain a day player role that pays only a little over $600 for a days work. Also, casting director Dea Vise claims that over half of the people that are on network television today paid for their job interview. It is necessary to point out that in California it is illegal to exchange money for the possibility of getting a job. It is illegal thanks to the Krekorian Talent Scam Prevention Act of 2009. The law outlaws workshops and casting directors from charging or attempting to charge an artist for an audition or an employment opportunity.

Following the report, actors started petitions to crack down on illegal casting director workshops. Actors throughout Los Angeles pushed the LA City Attorney Mike Fuer and the city’s chief of investigations to look into acting workshop businesses. Then last February, the LA City Attorney filed charges against five casting workshops involved in a budget pay to play scams.

Feuer argued, “Aspiring performers who pursue their dreams should be treated with respect and never be exploited for profit.”

Now Jason Kennedy, an organizer for the “Casting Community Defense Fund” and CSA casting director, has launched a fundraising campaign to raise money for the legal defense fund for casting directors involved and charged in the alleged pay to play crime. Their goal is simple, to raise funds to help pay for the initial legal expenses for the casting directors.

“The goal of this defense fund is to help pay for our colleagues’ initial legal expenses, showing them that they are not alone and we stand by them in this fight.”

Kennedy argues that it is a right for casting professionals to teach classes for actors. He argues that artists benefit from the educational value of workshops and classes conducted by casting professionals. His goal is to raise $45,000 over the next 30 days and so far he may even reach his goal. At the time of writing this article, the Cason community defense fund has raised nearly $20,000.

Report: Kids Acting School Targeted Kids with Misinformation

0

Earlier this week, an Atlanta talent agency posted on Facebook that a scam was running through the streets of Atlanta. Scams are not new. The film industry is littered with scams, scam artists, and people trying to take advantage of other people’s hopes and dreams.

But according to Deadline, a kid acting school is being accused of targeting children with false claims. The International Performing Arts Academy (IPAA), which is headquartered in Chicago Illinois, calls itself “the most prestigious facility of its kind.” Moreover, the acting school claims “built and maintained a strong reputation among the top agents, managers, casting directors, choreographers and record executives in the entertainment industry.”

However, the acting school training manual and a class action lawsuit are putting the acting school under a bright light. For example, in the training manual, the acting school reportedly claims Halle Berry, Chris Hemsworth, and Jennifer Garner attended the acting school. However, an investigation by Deadline reports that none of these celebrities participated in the program.

The acting school was also involved in a lawsuit. A mother of a child who attended Barbizon classes in Sacramento paid $2000 for the school services and was reportedly pressured into spending an additional $8,000 for the IPAA Showcase; a program that claims to showcase a kids talent to casting directors, producers, and directors. The lawsuit argued that the acting school IPAA conspired with the Barbizon school to purposefully mislead children and their parents – and accusation the school firmly denies.

From Deadline:

“Plaintiff’s mere incantations – no matter how numerous – that defendants are ‘talent scams’ do not make them so,” the defendants said in a demurrer filed with the court, noting that the 2009 Talent Scam Prevention Act “was not intended to, and does not, prohibit talent training services, talent counseling services, and talent listing services that comply with the provisions and prohibitions set forth in the Act.”

The lawsuit, the defense argues, “Is devoid of any cogent allegation as to how Barbizon is an ‘unlawful’ advance-fee talent scam and instead focuses largely on its actions of ‘referring’ students to Showcase. Despite this, Barbizon is named directly in the first cause of action as a ‘talent scam.’ ”

Deadline was also able to obtain a recruiting manual. In the recruiting handbook, there are examples of ways to reportedly convince and persuade kids and their parents into signing up for the acting school. Recruiters are encouraged to ask pulling questions instead of pushing questions “help complete successful sales”.

You can read the full investigation into the acting school here.

The Rock and Vin Diesel Will Not Promote ‘Fate of the Furious’ Movie Together

Several months ago, while Fast and the Furious eight was filming in Atlanta, Georgia reports surfaced that Dwayne The Rock Johnson and Vin Diesel were no longer getting along. Apparently, there’s been plenty of heat between the franchise stars Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson. Now they are reportedly not even willing to market and promote the film while being in the same building together.

It all started last March when Dwayne Johnson posted a video on his Instagram. In the video, The Rock accused some of his male costars of being unprofessional.

“When you watch this movie next April and it seems like I’m not acting in some of these scenes and my blood is legit boiling – you’re right,” Johnson wrote.

But it didn’t stop there. A few weeks later, Johnson uploaded another video to his Instagram page. In the video, Johnson gave praise to several of the cast members and crew who worked on the movie. But one actor was not mentioned in the Instagram post. That actor was Vin Diesel.

While this may have shocked many fans of the Fast and Furious franchise, Diesel, who has an extensive social media following with over hundred million likes on Facebook, made a Facebook video featuring costar Michelle Rodriguez addressing the issue.

You would assume that the drama would’ve stopped there. The two biggest actors in one of the greatest movies of 2017 will let that show go. However, according to the Hollywood Reporter, the two stars being separate during the press tour for the fate of the furious. Studio sources were quick to tell the Hollywood Reporter that the stars animosity towards each other won’t cause any problems or affect the movie’s marketing campaign in any way. How are they doing this? By keeping them separate.

“What happened is over, and no one expects there to be any lingering effects. When it comes time to promote the movie, this will have no bearing.”

Remains to be seen whether the stars drama will affect the film’s box office numbers. But who knows? Maybe this bitter feud between the two male costars is just a secret marketing campaign in and of itself.

The new program is called Sundance Institute – YouTube New Voices Lab. The program will support a group of 10 creators developing scripted short-form content for digital platforms that are up to 25 minutes in length per episode.

The YouTube New Voices Lab will take place this November in Los Angeles, California where aspiring writers will work on their craft.

This year’s Lab will take place November 9-11, 2017 in Los Angeles, where Fellows will work with an exciting group of creators, showrunners and episodic producers to develop their stories in an environment that encourages risk-taking and innovation. At the Lab, Fellows will participate in an intensive writing workshop, one-on-one creative story meetings, writers’ rooms, and group conversations about production, post-production, and marketing in the evolving digital landscape.

Following the program, content creators will receive year-round support including creative and tactical advice from industry advisors including agents, managers, attorneys, showrunner, producers, and other people who can help take their idea to production to finally distribution.
