Is ABC “Subliminally Racist”?

0

For the first time in the last ten years, we have the first Asian-American sitcom and its host network ABC was accused of being “subliminally racist”.

Fresh Off the Boatis the New York Times best-selling memoir which inspired the sitcom. The book was written by celebrity chef Eddie Huang about his experiences growing up in the US as a Chinese American in the 1990’s.

fob-tweet

According to Urban Dictionary, the term “Fresh off the boat” can be scene as a derogatory term for Asian Americans.

Fresh Off the Boat- When a location has been infiltrated by an individual or collection of people who are of a certain ethnic minority or nationality.

Me: “Raymond, look over there at that group of Chinese people”.

Raymond: “Shit they fresh off the boat”.

Eddie Huang works as a producer for the show and has been very straightforward about keeping the name of the show the same, despite the possibility of the term being considered as derogatory to Asian Americans.

tumblr_n5mz31Omux1spy1zno1_500

“I would never call myself an American. I’m a Taiwanese-Chinese-American. My parents came here in the late ’70s and had me about three years after they’d lived in this country. So I consider myself fresh. You can’t tell me to not consider myself something,” Huang said in an interview with BuzzFeed.

In a with TIME, Eddie Huang defended his decision and explains why he not change the title:

“The book is very much about how growing up in America, you’re almost shamed into assimilation, and I chose the name Fresh off the Boat because as I got older, I really, really started to own who I was, where I was from. I had that duality of growing up in a very traditional Taiwanese-Chinese home, and then the outside American kind of wilderness and the older I got, the more I wanted to be fresh off the boat.

If dominant culture is going to misunderstand it and use it or whatever, I can’t control that. But I know that my intention is very honest, it has integrity and it means a lot to me to reclaim the word. My mom was only in America, I think three years, when she had me. I grew up with people who just got here and that experience is very special to me. And it’s also an experience that dominant culture tried to kind of shame me for.”

ABC picked up “Fresh Off the Boat” along with “Black-ish” for a racially diverse line-up.

The pilot episode was recently released to the media last Wednesday and it received a largely positive response.

Criticism towards Huang were made mostly on Twitter, but overall a majority of the comments have been positive.

Check out the trailer of “Fresh Off the Boat” and let us know what you think!

The other television series that came under criticism is ABC’s “Black-Ish“. The show centers on Andre Johnson, played by Anthony Anderson and his family in the suburbs. But has success brought too much assimilation for this black family? With a little help from his dad, Dre sets out to establish a sense of cultural identity for his family that honors their past while embracing the future.

Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think:

Regardless of the titles of the televisions series, the fact that ABC was able to pick up an Asian-American television series, and a African American centered TV series speaks volume as ABC wants to become diverse network for all different cultures.

Use the “Memory Palace” Technique to Memorize Lines

0

Do you need help memorizing your lines? Try using the “Memory Palace” technique to memorize lines for your next audition, TV show, and feature film.

The people who are able to memorize a large set of numbers, a shuffled deck of cards, or tons of dialogue, have normal brains just like you and me.

But, what makes those individuals different is the techniques they use to memorize information.

Make a mental picture and build a mental palace

Many feature films have pages upon pages of dialogue. Not to mention five minute monologues. Often times this is extremely stressful and hard to recall all the information.

But, here are two steps to helping you remembering all of the lines of dialogue.

  1. Turn abstract, boring things that you would not normally remember into something that you can really recall and more visual.
  2. Find a place to store your mental images ie, your “memory palace“.

Consider your memory palace as a mental image of your home. There’s a kitchen, bathroom, living room, and bedrooms. Each piece of information that you are trying to memorize is created into a mental image, and then placed into your home. The more images, the bigger your home gets.

For instance, if you have dialogue between you and another character. Break up parts of the script into mental images, and feelings. Then envision those mental images inside a house. As you continue through your script, continue to add mental images inside the your memory palace.

When you need to recall your lines simply go back to your mental palace, and re envision those mental images as parts of the palace.

This will help you recall tons of lines, dialogue, and boring information that you would not normally be able to.

Joshua Foer gives an amazing example of how to use the “memory palace” technique:

This technique can be used in more than just acting. It can help you memorize telephone numbers, names, and other information that is normally boring, or difficult to recall.

Overall: The key is to make your images the most outrageous images you can think of. The more outrageous, the better.

Hollywood Considers Hispanics the Most Important Consumers

0

Hispanics are considered the most important consumers at movie theaters.

According to the John Fithian the head of the National Association of Theater Owners, “Hispanics are far and away the most important consumers at our cinemas”.

This is largely because Hispanics are spending more money on entertainment than any other demographic. In addition, by 2050 one out of three Americans will be Hispanic, the need for Hollywood to cater to growing Hispanic community is becoming a necessity.

According to Fithian, 44% of Hispanics go to the movies a few times a month, 63% rent movies on DVD or Blu-ray, and 76% own high quality televisions in their home – all in numbers higher than other ethnicities. Furthermore, Hispanics spend 30% more on concessions than any other ethnicity group.

A way to cater to the largely growing Hispanic community attending the movie theaters, the National Association of Theater Owners is in the process of testing an in-theater app that can translate English language films into multiple languages during a movie. However, the new app will have to overcome the threat of piracy, and disturbing audience members. However, Fithian is hopeful they will be able to create a new application to translate movies for the growing Hispanic audience.

Hispanics want higher end concessions and alcohol as part of the cinema-going experience. We’re lobbying almost every jurisdiction in the United States to allow alcohol in cinemas,” Fithian said. “This is the future of our business, and thank God.”

Hispanics love the movies everyone else loves, only a little bit more,” said Fithian who also noted the ticket-buying power of female and African-American audiences. “If women buy 52% of tickets, I don’t understand why 18% of major directors are women,” he said. “Diversity would help us sell tickets.”

When looking at demographics and studies, it shows that you don’t have to create a “Spanish” movie in order to connect with audiences. By, creating a movie that features themes that embrace the Hispanic culture that are coherent with spanish culture, producers are able to increase viewers in the spanish demographic. For example, Divergent recently campaigned directly to the Hispanic community by promoting on Spanish-language TV viewers on Univision.

Sandra Bullock House Nearly Robbed While She Was Home

0

A man tried to break into Sandra Bullock’s home while she was still in the house.

LAPD have arrested Joshua Corbett, 39, for allegedly breaking into Sandra Bullock‘s home early Sunday morning.

Sandra Bullock was home at the time of the break in and according to her reps, “she is unharmed and is fine.”

Corbettt reportedly broke in to Sandra Bullock’s home at 6:30 a.m. Sunday night.

NBC Los Angeles reports that the LAPD are still investigating to see if he is a stalker.

The case was being classified as a hot prowl burglary because the “The Blind Side” actress was home at the time, but because of Bullock’s status police were looking into whether the man is a stalker.

Currently, Sandra Bullock is listed as the highest-paid actress in the world with $56 million per movie. Her most recent movie, Gravityallowed for her to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

Her biggest movies that boosted her career occurred in the 1990’s with Demolition Man, Speed, The Net, While You Were Sleeping, A Time to Kill, and Miss Congeniality.

Despite several Hollywood-celebrity-break-ins, robberies are nothing new. Six years ago, there was a group of robberies all led by the “Bling Ring“, a group of seven teenagers and young adults based in and around Calabasas, California. They robbed the homes of several celebrities over a period between October 2008 through August 2009. The “Bling Ring” stole about $3 million in cash and clothings. A majority of the property belonged to Paris Hilton.

Seth Rogen Thinks Movie Ratings are “Stupid”

0

Seth Rogen considers movie ratings system ‘stupid’ and ‘weird’.

Recently, at the Produced By conference, Seth Rogen spoke about the movie ratings system. He argued that, “There’s nothing more frustrating than being on set and coming up with a joke and being told you can’t do it because it’s a PG movie.”

I guess Seth Rogen won’t be making a PG rated movie any time soon. Rogen and Evan Goldberg said that it was extremely difficult and frustrating to make Green Hornet as a movie. “We learned not to make $200 million movies,” said Rogen. “It’s not fun.”

Goldberg said that the Green Hornet was their reason to stick with R-rated movies. They argued that R-rated movies allow them to play out their often raunchy humor however they wanted.

“Once it’s R-rated you can pretty much do anything you want except penetration,” said Rogen adding with a smile: “Once it’s R-rated you’re pretty much left alone contract wise.”

Seth Rogen pointed out that the ratings system isn’t the only thing that limited Rogen and Goldberg. It took them years to get the Neighbors movies made, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Rogen said that he was so frustrated with notes and changes, they decided to cut the budget of the production in order to make the movie they wanted to make. “At least we didn’t make a movie we hate and had to work on for a year and a half.”

Goldberg said they are currently in discussion in doing a sequel to Neighbors but, don’t get too excited. The two producers argue that sequles “crummy” and they will most likely pass on the production.

Seth Rogen even pointed out how he was able to start his career in Hollywood. It all started by hanging out with producer, writer Judd Apataow’s office. Without getting paid he was able to become an associate producer on The 40 Year Old Virgin. After the success of that production he was able to sell Super Bad to Sony.

“It was our first experience and we had a lot of control,” recalled Rogen. Adding with a laugh: “We just thought that’s how movies were. They give you $20 million and that’s how it was … We didn’t realize Judd gave us this protective bubble.”

Expect more movies to come in the future from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

They are developing a movie called Jazz Cops, which is about police in the 1950s who try to infiltrate the jazz music scene. Rogen said it is about the first white cop who works with a black cop, and Rogen is attached to star with Kevin Hart.

They are also in production on their first animated movie, Sausage Party, which they said is tedious and challenging, and only bearable because they love what they are creating.

Rogen said it is not true that they get stoned on marijuana and then think up movie ideas – except in the case of Sausage Party. He said that began during a session with Jonah Hill, as a joke. They thought about what a movie with that title would be like, and eventually it came to be real. [via]

Seth Rogen was recently under fire after, Washington Post writer claimed the type of movies Seth Rogen produced helped spur Elliot Rodger’s killing spree. Rogen later dismissed those accusations and author.

Actresses reveal their most traumatic and challenging moments and it is inspiring

Angela Bassett discussed working with snakes on American Horror Story: Coven. “Mind you, my character is supposed to be totally comfortable around these things and in charge of the moment, but I was introduced to them just before we shot the scene. My stomach was jumping around even though there was a snake wrangler on set, because these guys are so unpredictable,” she said. “I really earned my money that day.”

The scene was shot as part of a flashback sequence on-location. We had to do it in a single day, so I prepped hard. We don’t have trailers when we’re on location, but I found a quiet corner where I could have a safe little space. I fasted all day so that I would feel pure, clean, empty. I felt a great responsibility to that scene, and I tried to live the beautifully crafted story with honesty and with a grace of non-judgment. It meant a lot to me to be able to portray that story because I feel like it is a staggeringly familiar situation to far more women than we would like to think. I wanted them to be able to see themselves not as victims, but as survivors.

There are a ton of insightful interviews in the Hollywood Reporter article. It gives you a unique perspective as to how these famous actors get into character and create scenes that we enjoy, and never forget.

3 Things You Should Do After Having an Audition

0

Continue to apply for roles after having a great audition it will keep your spirit up.

If you have a good audition with a casting director, it’s pretty easy to wait and sit back for their decision or callback. But, if you want to stop yourself from agonizing while they make that decision we suggest that you keep applying for more jobs and opportunities.

It may seem straightforward, but anyone who has a great audition knows that you feel so confident and relaxed that it is easy just to sit back and wait for  a call back. But, that is the last thing you would like to do, instead here are 3 things you should after a great audition.

  1. Remember that ever production company is different. There is no rule that a producer will respond to you in 24 hours or even a month. However, if you don’t hear anything back after a week or so, that typically means “no”.
  2. Move on as soon as you finish your audition. Keep planning for your next production or audition. Don’t get stuck in the moment.
  3. Continue applying for other casting calls, short films, and other productions while waiting for the response. It will protect you from feeling rejected if the production company later says no.

The next time you find yourself worrying over an audition, remember that you are better off looking for your next production than sitting by the phone.

Are you looking to save some extra cash? Do you need to buy new head shots, film a demo reel, or really want a new car?  Well here is how you can save a few hundred bucks shopping at WalMart.

Walmart claims to have the lowest prices around, and will match prices at the time of purchase. They recently started a new website that will pay you back after you purchase items in certain markets.

Currently, the system only works in a few metro areas right now including, Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Huntsville, Lexington, Minneapolis and San Diego. If you live in one of those areas, you go to the website and put in information from your receipt within seven days. If there’s a lower price from a competitor on most grocery items, Walmart will pay you the difference in the form of a gift card.

Now, you can buy that $600 DSLR camera you were always talking about.

Taye Diggs Argues Hollywood Does Not Like to Take Risks with Black Films

0

Hollywood actor, Taye Diggs, says studios set double standards for black films.

Actor Taye Diggs recently spoke on the the approach Hollywood has towards African American films and argues that Hollywood is separate and not equal.

Whether a studio decides to proceed in making a black-oriented film can depend on the success of other movies with a primarily African-American cast, even if the productions are not even connected.

In a recent interview, Taye Diggs said that he and his cast mates of “The Best Man Holiday” were excited to start on a sequel. However, a sequel was dependent not upon the success of their feature film, but on how black-oriented films, including “Think Like a Man Too,” perform at the box office.

“Unfortunately, the business is such that as far as studios are concerned, they judge one quote-unquote black movie on how other ‘black’ movies have done, even if they have nothing to do with each other,”

“We’ve definitely come a long way. But we’ve got a long way to go,” Diggs comments. “It’s too bad we can’t do well on our own merit when it comes to the studios. They don’t like to take risks and, unfortunately, we’re still considered a huge risk, even though I don’t think we are.”

The Best Man Holiday” made nearly $70 million in North America last year and was highly profitable for the studio companies, according to Paul Degarabedian, senior analyst for box-office tracker, Rentrak.

Taye Diggs is known for his lead roles in movies such as, “The Wood“, “How Stella Got Her Groove Back” and “Rent“. He is currently featured in the new TNT drama, “Murder in the First“.

McDonald’s Wants to Increase Minimum Wage, Should Hollywood Too?

0

Since Fast Food employees started protesting against working conditions, McDonald’s has always been quiet regarding minimum wage; Until recently.

CEO Don Thompson recently spoke at Northwestern University and came out to support President Obama‘s proposed $10.10 wage increase. Despite, fast food employees asking for $15, McDonald’s CEO looks as though he plans to change the pay scale for thousands of employees across the nation.

“McDonald’s will be fine,” he reportedly told Northwestern. “We’ll manage through whatever the additional cost implications are.”

The implications of McDonald’s increasing their minimum wage may send shockwaves throughout the country and even affect the Television and Film Industry. Currently, the lowest paid position on a film and TV crew is the background extra. They average extra earns minimum wage to $8/hour. If Congress finally does decide to increase minimum wage, then the cost for background extras will increase.

Considering that the average SAG background extra is unable to make a $14,000/yr, increasing the minimum wage for extras may just be a good thing. Improving compensation for extras could provide producers with a group of professional, qualified and experienced extras who know what to do on set. Or, producers run the risk of a group of extras that take cell phone photos of the actors and sell them to tabloids and even ruin a multi-million dollar feature film.

Do you think Hollywood should pay extras more money? Would it hurt productions to pay extras $10.10/hr? What are your thoughts? Share them with us in the comments below!

Describing New Mexico’s new auditing process as “onerous”, he stated that the company had to scan over 12,000 pages of financial documents to get its incentives. “it’s tough to get answers and explanations”.

Alcon Entertainment‘s Transcendence finished filming in June and they still have not received their tax incentives either. She called the process with unfortunate and “You don’t have this with other states incentives.”

Other panelists also gave high marks to tax incentive incentive programs in Louisiana, Georgia and Massachusetts.
