Jamie Foxx Issues Apology for Controversial Instagram Post Deemed Antisemitic

Jamie Foxx has expressed remorse for a now-deleted Instagram post that sparked accusations of being antisemitic.

In a post that has since been removed, Foxx wrote, “They killed this dude named Jesus… What do you think they’ll do to you???! #fakefriends #fakelove.”

Foxx later posted a new message on Instagram to address the situation: “I want to extend my sincerest apologies to the Jewish community and anyone offended by my previous post. I now recognize that my choice of words inadvertently caused offense, and I am genuinely sorry. I must clarify that my reference to ‘they’ was directed at a deceitful acquaintance who betrayed me and did not intend to generalize. My heart is filled with love for all, including the Jewish community. I deeply regret any hurt I’ve caused. With love, Jamie Foxx.”

Heart emojis, a praying hands emoji, and a fox emoji accompanied the statement.

The controversy surrounding Foxx’s initial post also had implications for Jennifer Aniston.

A screenshot shared by A Wider Frame, a newsletter covering events in the Jewish community, showed that Aniston had liked Foxx’s original post.

Taking to her Instagram stories, Aniston addressed the issue alongside the Wider Frame screenshot. She stated, “I find this deeply unsettling. I did not ‘like’ this post intentionally or accidentally. Moreover, I wish to make it unequivocally clear to my friends and anyone distressed by this appearing on their feeds – I do not endorse any form of antisemitism. Hatred in any form is unacceptable. Full stop.”

Foxx’s post faced criticism for seemingly perpetuating the antisemitic notion that Jewish people were responsible for Jesus Christ’s death.

These events unfolded as Foxx continued to recuperate from a “medical complication” that arose during the filming of the Netflix production, Back in Action.

In a recent Instagram video, Foxx opened up about his recovery process, although he refrained from providing extensive details about the incident. He remarked, “I faced an ordeal I never imagined going through.”

He refuted speculations that he was “blind” or “paralyzed.”

He affirmed, “As you can see, my vision and eyes function well. I am not paralyzed. However, my journey to recovery had its challenges. Despite that, I am making strides and can resume work.”

Foxx also acknowledged the absence of updates from himself and his team during his healing process.

“I understand that many were eager for updates, but honestly, I wanted you to see me in a better light,” he added. “I wished you to witness me laughing, enjoying life, cracking jokes, working on movies and TV shows. I didn’t want you to see me connected to tubes, grappling with uncertainty about my survival.”

Aniston and Foxx have collaborated previously on the Horrible Bosses film series.

Warner Music CEO’s Approach to AI: Empowering Artists’ Choices

In the wake of Warner Music Group’s latest quarterly financial report, CEO Robert Kyncl shared insights on the triumph of the Barbie movie soundtrack and the promising outlook for continuous growth in monthly fees for music subscription services. Kyncl also delved into the recent TikTok partnership and the company’s AI integration strategies.

The former YouTube executive lauded the company’s strong start in the fiscal fourth quarter, commencing in July, showcasing impressive releases like “Barbie: The Album” and more.

During the earnings conference call, Kyncl highlighted the much-anticipated track “Dance The Night” by Dua Lipa, which holds the top spot on the official European airplay chart. This track initiates the campaign for “Barbie: The Album,” published by Atlantic Records. Reflecting the movie’s impact, the album has marked a significant global cultural phenomenon, achieving number-one status in seven countries, including Canada, Australia, the U.K., New Zealand, Netherlands, Ireland, and Portugal. Remarkably, it’s the first-ever soundtrack to yield three top 5 singles in the U.K.

While the specifics of the expanded TikTok collaboration remained confidential, Kyncl emphasized its enhanced nature, describing it as “significantly improved.” This deal allows artists and songwriters to access advanced monetization, marketing, and fan development features. The groundbreaking partnership will also foster the joint development of alternative economic models, fostering ecosystem growth.

Regarding subscription pricing trends, Kyncl noted the industry’s embrace of price hikes and evolving partnerships as a catalyst for streaming growth. He anticipated that recent price adjustments could pave the way for regular subscription fee increments.

Kyncl also turned attention to AI, characterizing it as a creative tool and asserting that artists can decide their role in their work. He underlined Warner Music Group’s primary goal of safeguarding artists’ choices and autonomy, emphasizing that preserving their voices equates to preserving their livelihoods and identities. The CEO stressed the company’s commitment to ensuring artists have options while harnessing the advantages that AI tools present.

Drawing parallels between the growth of user-generated content and the current AI landscape, Kyncl revealed the company’s proactive stance. Warner Music Group collaborates with generative AI engines, distribution platforms, artists, and songwriters to explore novel applications. Many prominent Warner artists are already discovering impactful ways to leverage generative AI for music creation, augmentation, and remixing, with notable examples slated for release later in the quarter.

Additionally, artists are tapping into generative AI for visual arts and music videos, exemplified by acts like Disturbed and Linkin Park. Moreover, AI-powered technology breathes new life into recordings by late artists. Kyncl shared instances where AI has isolated vocal performances from recordings of legends like Sammy Davis Jr. and Maria Callas.

Kyncl also spotlighted an exceptional creation: “one of the first official and professionally AI-generated songs featuring a deceased artist.” The poignant duet by Pedro Capmany with his late father, Jose Capmany, marked a milestone in resurrecting Jose’s musical legacy. Utilizing AI and machine learning, every nuance of Jose’s voice was meticulously modeled after analyzing his interviews, acapella, recorded songs, and live performances.

Concluding his insights, Kyncl painted a visionary picture of AI’s transformative potential, asserting that with the proper framework, it can enable fans to honor their idols through user-driven content like new cover versions and mash-ups. He acknowledged AI’s monumental impact on human history, highlighting its power to amplify creativity and innovation.

Issa Rae’s ‘Rap Sh!t’ Season 2 Faces Delay in August Premiere Amidst Hollywood Strikes

The highly-anticipated return of HBO Max’s “Rap Sh!t” Season 2, initially scheduled for August 10, has been postponed by Max. The new premiere date is November 9, with the first two episodes launching simultaneously, followed by weekly releases leading to the season finale on December 21.

This unexpected delay is a direct consequence of the ongoing labor strikes led by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA). The two powerful unions are advocating for improved contracts with major studios, resulting in actors being strictly prohibited from promoting any projects associated with the struck companies. On the other hand, writers need more press opportunities. By pushing the premiere to November, Warner Bros. Discovery, the studio behind “Rap sh!t,” aims to provide a more favorable environment for the series’ talent to actively participate in generating buzz around the show once the labor disputes are resolved.

Interestingly, “Rap Sh!t” is not the only summer series affected by these strikes. FX recently announced the delay of “A Murder at the End of the World,” starring Emma Corrin and TK, shifting its premiere from August 29 to a later date in November.

The narrative of “Rap Sh!t” revolves around Shawna (Aida Osman) and Mia (KaMillion), two estranged high school friends from Miami who reunite with a shared dream of forming a rap group. The series poses a compelling dilemma for the duo as they must choose between staying true to their authentic selves or conforming to the often demanding music industry. The cast also includes Jonica Booth, RJ Cyler, Daniel Augustin, and Jaboukie Young-White in prominent roles.

Created by the talented Issa Rae, an executive producer, “Rap Sh!t” boasts a stellar production team. Showrunner Syreeta Singleton, Hoorae’s Montrel McKay, 3 Arts Entertainment’s Jonathan Berry, Dave Becky, and Jim Kleverweis join Rae in bringing this exciting project to life. Notably, Yung Miami and JT from the renowned hip-hop duo City Girls serve as co-executive producers, alongside Kevin “Coach K” Lee and Pierre “P” Thomas representing Quality Control Films, as well as Sara Diya Rastogi and Jax Clark from Hoorae. To add an extra touch of authenticity, Rae’s audio content company, Raedio, handles music supervision for the series.

As fans eagerly await the new November premiere, the hope remains that the industry’s labor disputes will resolve by then, allowing “Rap Sh!t” to shine brightly on screen while its talented cast and crew actively engage with audiences to generate well-deserved excitement and acclaim.

Warner Bros. CEO is Hopeful for the End of The Strikes

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO, David Zaslav, expressed a conciliatory and urgent tone during the studio’s second-quarter financial analyst call regarding the ongoing Hollywood writers and actors strikes.

Zaslav emphasized the importance of the creative community, including writers, directors, editors, producers, actors, and the crew. He hoped both sides would return to negotiations and find a resolution that fairly compensates the writers and actors for their valuable contributions.

The strikes pose challenges for Warner Bros. Discovery and other major players in Hollywood, affecting the timing and performance of future content. The studio’s CFO, Gunnar Wiedenfels, revealed that the strikes saved the studio more than $100 million in operating costs in the second quarter and acknowledged their potential impact on future content.

Despite the challenges, Warner Bros. Discovery reported a narrower quarterly streaming loss, with streaming revenue rising by 13 percent in the second quarter. Zaslav highlighted opportunities for ad sales on the studio’s streaming platforms, expressing optimism for the future.

During the second quarter, Warner Bros. Discovery’s global streaming subscribers declined to 95.8 million due to the integration of Discovery+ and HBO Max into the new streamer Max. Analysts predicted a user drop during this transition.

Looking ahead, Zaslav confirmed the company’s commitment to making the streaming business sustainably profitable and highlighted the potential of their U.S. direct-to-consumer business to be suitable for all of 2023.

The earnings report also revealed that the studio’s overall EBITDA increased by 22 percent, driven by solid streaming performance. However, the Studios unit EBITDA declined by 25 percent due to a difficult comparison with the previous year’s results.

The networks unit also faced challenges, with advertising revenue falling by 13 percent and distribution revenue decreasing by 1 percent. Despite these obstacles, the company is focused on growth opportunities and plans to retire up to $2.7 billion in additional debt.

The megamerger between Discovery and WarnerMedia, which closed in April 2022, allowed the company to reposition its businesses and focus on direct-to-consumer opportunities. Zaslav highlighted the successful launch of Max in the U.S., which generated positive EBITDA in the first half of the year.

Overall, Warner Bros. Discovery remains committed to overcoming challenges, driving growth, and delivering value to its shareholders through its direct-to-consumer business and streaming platforms. The company is determined to navigate the changing landscape of the entertainment industry while sustaining profitability.

SAG-AFTRA’s Compromises: An Overview of Movie and Series Granted Boycott Exemptions

In response to the strike against Hollywood studios on July 14, SAG-AFTRA has implemented its interim agreements program. This program allows independent productions without direct ties to the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers to continue filming while the strike continues.

Since the strike began, SAG-AFTRA has continuously updated the list of projects granted waivers. Under these waivers, members can work on these independent productions without violating the strike order. Additionally, on July 27, casting-specific releases were introduced, enabling members to audition and negotiate casting opportunities for these projects. However, they still need to be allowed to travel, rehearse, or provide services for the production.

Prominent projects that have been granted waivers include Angel Studios’ Bible-based series “The Chosen,” A24 films “Mother Mary” and “I Dream of Unicorns,” and Apple TV+’s “Tehran.” Notable actors such as Anne Hathaway, Dakota Fanning, Glenn Close, James Badge Dale, Ben Foster, Graham Greene, and Melissa Leo, among others, can continue working under these agreements. Casting waivers have also been granted for movies from renowned directors like Guy Ritchie and Destry Allyn Spielberg.

Harrison Ford on Embracing the Art of Storytelling and the Enigma of Acting

Renowned actor Harrison Ford, known for his iconic roles and enigmatic personality, rarely grants interviews, but in early 2023, he sat down for a rare conversation.

Ford, famous for adhering to the first rule of the Acting Club, which is to avoid talking about acting, made an exception during a discussion about his career and passion for storytelling, even amidst his love for flying his plane.

Reflecting on his recent experience in his first television comedy series, Shrinking on AppleTV+, Ford shared that while some might find it arrogant, he didn’t feel he learned anything new. Instead, he emphasized the significance of being present in the moment, welcoming spontaneity, and staying true to the circumstances to create authentic performances.

Recounting his early days as an actor, Ford admitted to grappling with shyness and fear during his initial stage appearances. However, he overcame those emotions and found joy in collaborating with others to narrate compelling stories on stage.

Though Ford has reduced his acting frequency over the years, he continues to pursue acting because he feels it allows him to contribute meaningfully. He regards acting as his most familiar and comfortable territory, allowing him to craft behavior from words on a page and immerse himself in the storytelling process. The veteran actor perceives storytelling as a service to humanity, an age-old practice that resonates with people’s fundamental need to share narratives through cave paintings or religious teachings. Even as he embraces roles of older characters, Ford remains thrilled about the prospect of storytelling and would only continue as long as it brings him joy.

Despite often being associated with particular character types in his prolific career spanning over 60 movies, Ford cherishes opportunities to explore diverse roles that differ from his real persona. He admits that deviating from his usual character choices sometimes results in less commercial success, as audiences are more familiar with the expectations tied to his name. Ford fondly recalls a time when he challenged this notion by sporting a beard in The Fugitive, triumphing over the resistance from the studio.

Harrison Ford’s enduring passion for storytelling and willingness to step outside his comfort zone demonstrates his commitment to acting. While remaining somewhat of an enigma to the public, his performances on screen continue to captivate and inspire audiences worldwide.

Writers Guild Urges Studios to Resume Negotiations

0

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has announced that the studios and streaming companies have requested a meeting on August 4th.

This meeting would mark the first time the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) have come together since the WGA initiated a strike on May 1st.

In a statement to its members, the WGA negotiating committee revealed, “The AMPTP, through Carol Lombardini, reached out to the WGA today and requested a meeting this Friday to discuss negotiations. We’ll communicate with you sometime after the meeting with further information. As we’ve said before, be wary of rumors. You will hear important news directly from us whenever there is important news to share.”

The location of the potential meeting remains undisclosed, and the WGA still needs to confirm whether the meeting will occur on Friday.

An AMPTP spokesperson stated, “We remain committed to finding a path to mutually beneficial deals with both unions,” referring to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA, also experiencing a strike.

If the two sides convene, it will be the initial step in a lengthy reconciliation process. The WGA’s strike has persisted for approximately 14 weeks after contract talks broke down in May over numerous issues. The Guild has cited the producers’ unwillingness to concede on matters such as viewership-based residuals, regulation of artificial intelligence, and minimum staffing numbers. Additionally, disagreements emerged regarding guaranteeing a second “step” in screenwriters’ deals and providing weekly minimums for WGA members in postproduction, as indicated in a document circulated by the union in early May.

Conversely, the AMPTP contended that the A.I. issue necessitated further discussions, which they have committed to doing. Regarding the minimum staffing proposal, the group criticized it as a hiring quota that clashes with the creative nature of the industry. The AMPTP also refuted the WGA’s allegations that Hollywood companies have fostered a gig economy within the union workforce.

Meanwhile, the SAG-AFTRA, the performers’ union, initiated its strike after their three-year contract expired, and negotiations with the producers failed to reach a successor pact. This strike revolves around issues related to A.I. and a proposal to allocate a portion of subscriber revenue to streaming project casts.

Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the national executive director and chief negotiator of SAG-AFTRA, stated, “We are ready, willing, and able to return to the table at any time.” Crabtree-Ireland urged the AMPTP to reinitiate talks, emphasizing that the strike can only end through dialogue and that getting the industry back to work as soon as possible is crucial.

In related news, on June 23rd, the Directors Guild of America (DGA) finalized an agreement with employers. The DGA’s negotiations also touched on issues overlapping with the WGA’s, including certain limitations on A.I. and a new foreign residuals formula based on a platform’s international subscriber count.

Stephen Amell Opposes SAG-AFTRA Strike, Citing Reductive Negotiating Tactics

Renowned actor Stephen Amell, best known for his role in the hit series “Arrow,” recently shared his views on the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. During an appearance at Raleigh’s GalaxyCon, Amell expressed that although he stands with his union, he does not support the current actors’ strike.

Being based in Hollywood, Amell acknowledged that many people may need to learn the strike’s implications thoroughly. He clarified that he supports his union and remains loyal to them. However, he finds striking to be a frustrating and reductive negotiating tactic. Despite his reservations, Amell emphasized that he stands firmly with the union.

In light of his remarks at the event, Amell took to Instagram to ensure no misunderstanding about his thoughts and intentions. He provided clarity and context to prevent any unintentional misinterpretations of his position. Recognizing that soundbites can be quickly taken out of context, he respected fellow union members and their perspectives.

As one of the first actors to voice his opposition to the strike, which commenced on July 14 following the expiration of SAG-AFTRA’s contract and failed talks with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, Amell’s stance carries significant weight. The union believes that crucial issues, such as streaming and artificial intelligence compensation, are vital to actors and necessitated a labor stoppage to secure a favorable agreement.

Addressing the strike, SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher conveyed the union’s disappointment with the AMPTP’s actions. She powerfully expressed that actors were the victims in this situation and accused the industry of greed. Drescher was appalled by the vast disparities on various matters and called out the supposed hypocrisy of pleading poverty while lavishly rewarding CEOs.

As discussions continue between SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, the industry remains closely monitored for any developments that could impact actors and the entertainment landscape. While not in favor of striking, Amell’s stance underscores the complexities and diverse perspectives surrounding this crucial issue within the industry.

Major Film Delays Amid Actor Strikes Pose New Threats to the Movie Business

After navigating the challenges caused by the COVID pandemic, the movie theater industry faces another setback due to labor strikes.

The strikes have brought Hollywood to a standstill and are causing significant disruptions to the release calendar for the latter half of 2023. As studios grapple with significant title delays and uncertain release schedules, the cinema operators are worried about the potential impact on their businesses, reminiscent of the pandemic-era woes. This article delves into the current situation and its implications for the movie industry.

The labor strikes have led to significant changes in the release schedule of various films. Sony, for instance, has pushed back the release of “Gran Turismo” and “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” while “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” has been removed from the calendar altogether. Similarly, Disney and Searchlight have shifted the release date of “Poor Things,” and Amazon’s “Challengers” has been postponed to next year. Warner Bros. also contemplates pushing “Dune: Part Two” to 2024 and reassessing dates for other holiday releases.

Cinema operators are apprehensive about the prolonged strike’s potential ramifications. Chris Randleman, chief revenue officer of Flix Brewhouse, stresses that moving major film releases out of 2023 would be detrimental to theaters and could hinder their recovery. Many theater chains, burdened with debt, struggle to regain pre-pandemic ticket sales. The domestic box office remains nearly 20% below pre-COVID levels, leaving exhibitors vulnerable to any downturn in the movie business. The need for compelling films to screen for months could result in bankruptcies or closures for some theaters, impacting studios’ ability to showcase their upcoming releases.

With stars unable to participate in promotional campaigns due to the strike, major tentpole films risk losing audience attention. Films might need the allure of red-carpet appearances and talk show appearances to attract audiences. Film festivals like Venice, Toronto, and Telluride, which are critical platforms to launch awards season campaigns, are also affected. The absence of a robust promotional campaign may hinder the box office success of major films like “The Flash” from Warner Bros. and DC.

While the situation is challenging, cinema executives are optimistic about surviving the sparse release calendar, having previously weathered similar circumstances. They leverage other avenues, such as private theater rentals and trailers, to engage moviegoers. However, they acknowledge the importance of resolving the strike promptly to stabilize the industry and facilitate effective film promotion.

As labor strikes continue to disrupt Hollywood’s operations, the movie business faces a precarious situation with potential implications for studios, cinema operators, and moviegoers alike. The uncertain release calendar and limited promotional opportunities present significant challenges for the industry’s recovery. It remains crucial for all stakeholders to find a resolution to ensure a vibrant and thriving movie landscape in the future.

Barbie Surpasses $775M Worldwide and Nears Billion-Dollar Box Office Milestone

The Greta Gerwig-directed movie Barbie has been setting the box office on fire, crossing the $775 million mark globally. It is on the brink of entering the coveted billion-dollar club. Warner Bros. is beaming with pride as the female-driven film captivates audiences worldwide.

In its second weekend, Barbie added a staggering $131.5 million to its box office haul. The film secured $93 million domestically and an impressive $122.2 million from 70 international markets. With the domestic earnings reaching $351.4 million and the overseas tally standing at an equally impressive $423.1 million, the film’s worldwide gross has soared to an incredible $774.5 million. This feat was achieved in 12 days since its midweek release in various overseas regions.

The success of Barbie has surpassed expectations, fueling speculations that the film might become the first Hollywood movie directed solely by a woman to reach the $1 billion milestone. This would beat the record previously held by Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman, which grossed $822 million (not adjusted for inflation). Notably, it would be the second film in 2023 to join the billion-dollar club, following Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.34 billion).

Critics who predicted a sharp decline in Barbie’s second weekend were proven wrong, as the movie only saw a 43 percent drop in North America and even less overseas, at 32 percent.

The film’s success has extended even to China, where Barbie generated $25 million in box office revenue by Sunday, despite a modest $8.2 million opening. The unexpected surge in China’s interest has raised hopes for a successful exit in Japan next month.

Among all markets, the U.K. stands as the top performer with $61.6 million in earnings, surpassing the first ten days of the final Harry Potter film. In Brazil, Barbie has already become Warner Bros.’s highest-grossing film with an impressive $33.5 million.

Barbie’s regional success has also been significant, as it now ranks as Warner Bros.’ second-biggest movie of all time after Joker. Surpassing substantial titles such as the final Harry Potter film, Batman v. Superman, and Aquaman, the film has also enjoyed a steady 22 percent drop in Europe.

Interestingly, the simultaneous success of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has contributed to what is now called the “Barbenheimer effect,” providing a boost to the summer box office. Oppenheimer, from Universal Pictures, experienced an impressive second weekend, dropping only 44 percent in North America and earning $46.2 million, becoming the largest second weekend for an R-rated film, surpassing Deadpool 2’s record of $43.5 million. With a domestic total of $174.6 million and a foreign haul of $226.3 million, Oppenheimer has reached $400.4 million worldwide, ranking as Nolan’s sixth-biggest film.

In addition, Oppenheimer has become Nolan’s most prominent film ever in 28 markets and his most successful non-superhero title in 39 markets.

As both Barbie and Oppenheimer continue to flourish at the box office, the Barbenheimer effect showcases the remarkable impact of female-led cinema combined with the allure of Christopher Nolan’s unique storytelling, delivering an extraordinary summer movie season.

Actors Strike Causes Sony to Postpone Release Dates of ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse’ and ‘Kraven the Hunter

Sony Pictures has significantly changed its movie release schedule, affecting two highly anticipated films due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA actors strike.

The live-action Marvel movie “Kraven the Hunter,” featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the ruthless hunter and Spider-Man’s arch-nemesis, will be released on Labor Day weekend in 2024 instead of its original October 2023 date. The animated trilogy finale “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,” previously slated for March 2024, has been postponed indefinitely until the strike is resolved.

The decision to delay “Kraven the Hunter” was primarily driven by the need to give Aaron Taylor-Johnson and the rest of the cast, including Oscar winners Ariana DeBose and Russell Crowe, sufficient time to promote the film. In light of the strike, actors have chosen not to participate in promotional activities for major studio projects.

As for “Beyond the Spider-Verse,” the film faced delays as no voice lines had been recorded for the sequel, “Across the Spider-Verse.” Consequently, the production of the animated movie remains suspended until further notice, making it impossible to set a new release date.

Sony has a vested interest in the success of “Beyond the Spider-Verse” as its predecessor, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” received widespread acclaim and became the studio’s highest-grossing animated film, with a global box office revenue of $677 million. The positioning of “Beyond the Spider-Verse” on the 2024 or 2025 release schedule is highly anticipated by moviegoers eager to see how the trilogy’s cliffhanger will be resolved.

The one-year postponement of “Kraven the Hunter” may cause concern among cinema owners, who are already apprehensive about the impact of the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes on the film release calendar. As seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, when one studio adjusts its release dates, others follow suit.

Notably, “Kraven” was initially planned to receive support from Imax Auditoriums in October. However, the decision to delay the film came just days after Imax CEO Rich Gelfond expressed confidence that the strike would not affect films backed by his company. Gelfond cited Warner Bros.’ “Dune: Part Two” as an example when discussing his expectations in an earnings call.

In addition to the changes related to the strikes, Sony also announced other adjustments to its release slate. The upcoming sequel to “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” will now hit theaters during Easter weekend in 2024, while the next installments in the “Bad Boys” and “Venom” franchises are scheduled for summer 2024 releases. These changes are sure to have an impact on the overall film release landscape in the coming years.

Barbie Continues to Soar with Record-Breaking Second Weekend, while ‘Haunted Mansion’ Fails to Haunt the Box Office

In the latest box office news, ‘Barbie‘ is a shining star, breaking records with a staggering $93 million in its second weekend at the North American box office. Meanwhile, ‘Haunted Mansion’ had a lackluster start, earning only $24.2 million for Disney. Let’s delve into the details of these recent box office hits and misses.

Barbie, a female-led film directed by Greta Gerwig, has exceeded all expectations and shattered box office records. Despite predictions of a rapid decline after its remarkable debut, the movie showcased incredible staying power, experiencing only a modest 43 percent drop in ticket sales. This resulted in an impressive domestic total of $351.4 million by the end of Sunday.

Internationally, Barbie continued to paint the box office pink, grossing an additional $122.2 million, bringing its foreign tally to $423.1 million. Combining the global earnings, Barbie’s total stands at a dreamy $774.5 million, positioning it to join the exclusive billion-dollar club. It will be the second film of 2023 to achieve this feat, following Universal’s ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie,’ which collected an impressive $1.34 billion worldwide.

Interestingly, Barbie is also enjoying significant success in China, where it amassed $25 million in earnings, surpassing initial expectations, and could reach $40 million. The United Kingdom boasts the highest salaries for Barbie, with a whopping $61.6 million, outpacing the first ten days of the final Harry Potter film. Additionally, it has become Warner Bros.’s most successful film ever in Brazil, with an early total of $33.5 million.

Moreover, Barbie now holds the title for the biggest first week in Warner Bros. history, surpassing the legendary ‘The Dark Knight’ directed by Christopher Nolan.

On the other hand, Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer,’ the cinematic counterpart of the Barbenheimer effect, remains a box office force, maintaining a solid performance during its second weekend. The biographical drama about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, grossed an estimated $46.2 million, marking only a 44 percent decline in ticket sales. With a global haul of $400.4 million, including $174.6 million domestically and $226.3 million internationally, ‘Oppenheimer’ ranks as one of Nolan’s top-grossing films, ahead of ‘Tenet’ and ‘Batman Begins.’

Moreover, ‘Oppenheimer’ has been a boon for Imax, as it became the second-fastest film to reach $80 million in global Imax ticket sales. Due to its success, the film’s run has been extended through the weekend of Aug. 11-13, providing audiences with more opportunities to experience the masterpiece.

In contrast, ‘Haunted Mansion’ failed to meet expectations, debuting with a disappointing $24.2 million. The live-action family film, directed by Justin Simien, took on the challenge of transforming Disneyland’s iconic attraction into a supernatural horror-comedy. Unfortunately, it faced tough competition from Barbie and suffered from mediocre reviews, leading to a lackluster performance.

Disney remains hopeful that the movie’s good audience exit scores on PostTrak and a B+ CinemaScore will help it gain momentum and longevity, similar to Pixar’s ‘Elemental,’ which enjoyed an enviable multiple after a slow start. However, both ‘Haunted Mansion’ and ‘Elemental’ were expensive to produce, adding pressure on their box office performance. ‘Haunted Mansion’ alone cost at least $150 million before marketing.

Despite its underwhelming start, ‘Haunted Mansion’ did manage to earn $9.1 million from international markets, resulting in a global bow of $33.3 million.

Elsewhere at the box office, Angel Studios’ sleeper summer hit ‘Sound of Freedom’ continues to impress with a third-place finish and a domestic total of $149 million. Paramount’s ‘Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One’ faces tough competition from Barbenheimer but remains strong overseas, clearing the $300 million mark with a global total of $448.5 million.

Additionally, A24’s new specialty horror film, ‘Talk to Me,’ opened better than expected with $10 million, adding another success to A24’s roster.

In conclusion, Barbie’s reign at the box office continues with an extraordinary second weekend, while ‘Haunted Mansion’ struggles to spook audiences. Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ also stands as a formidable box office force, delighting Imax audiences worldwide. The box office competition remains fierce as the summer movie season unfolds, leaving audiences eager to see what future weekends will bring.

SAG-AFTRA Defends Interim Agreements as “Crucial to Our Strategic Approach” Amid Ongoing Debate

0

Amidst growing concerns from prominent members regarding SAG-AFTRA‘s interim agreements, the union leadership has come forward to justify granting these pacts. These agreements allow the continuation of film and TV productions during the ongoing performers’ strike, specifically for independent productions.

In a message sent to its members on Sunday evening, the union’s TV/theatrical negotiating committee emphasized that these agreements are a “crucial part of our strategic approach” during the 2023 negotiations and strike. They clarified that most projects granted interim contracts are independent of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) member companies, whose unresolved negotiations with the union led to the current strike. However, some exceptions are being made for projects with “extraordinary circumstances mandated by legal considerations, such as Tehran.” (SAG-AFTRA’s national executive director, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, previously explained that Tehran, an Apple TV+-distributed series produced by an Israeli company and filmed in Greece, is subject to “multiple national laws” on striking, which influenced the decision to grant the waiver.)

According to the negotiating committee, the terms and conditions of these interim agreements “reflect” what SAG-AFTRA is seeking to achieve in its ongoing TV/theatrical contract negotiations with the AMPTP. Thus, these agreements enable members to work for companies not affiliated with the AMPTP and demonstrate that “the wage increases and other terms, which the AMPTP has so far rejected, are indeed reasonable and appropriate.” (However, if SAG-AFTRA reaches a deal with significant entertainment companies before distributing projects with waivers, the terms and conditions of these interim agreements will ultimately align with the final words of the eventual sale with the AMPTP.)

Moreover, the negotiating committee argues that these pacts are essential in directing production budgets toward union-covered projects that employ union members rather than supporting non-union foreign productions. As a result, they encourage independent producers to apply for these interim agreements and urge SAG-AFTRA members to work on projects that obtain such contracts, along with other permissible work.

The message comes shortly after Viola Davis announced her decision to step away from the MRC film G20, which was set to be distributed by Amazon (MRC is not an AMPTP member, but Amazon, as the producer, is). SAG-AFTRA granted the film an interim agreement, but Davis said, “I do not feel that it would be appropriate for this production to move forward during the strike.”

Previously, Sarah Silverman had also expressed concerns about interim agreements, highlighting that these independent projects could be sold to companies like Netflix or Apple, whose production subsidiaries belong to the AMPTP. She argued that “the strike ends when they come to the table, and we make a deal in agreement.”

Addressing this concern, SAG-AFTRA’s negotiating committee reassured members that they understand the potential issue of interim agreement content being distributed by struck companies. However, they are confident that the terms of these agreements, particularly the streaming revenue share, will render distribution through AMPTP platforms unfeasible once an industrywide deal is reached. (One of SAG-AFTRA’s proposals for companies this year was for streaming films or TV shows’ casts to receive a portion of streaming subscription revenue based on the title’s success.)

The negotiating committee further emphasized that these agreements would not “prolong” the strike but instead exert “competitive pressure” on AMPTP companies.

As of now, SAG-AFTRA has granted interim agreements to various projects, including A24’s Death of a Unicorn, starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega, Mother Mary, featuring Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel, as well as Hammerstone Studios’ Flight Risk, with Mark Wahlberg. The television series The Chosen from Out of Order Studios and Balcony 9 Productions’ Bride Hard, starring Rebel Wilson, have also received waivers.
