How Streaming is Transforming The Entertainment Industry

The streaming wars are changing Hollywood and here’s how talent is winning and losing in this new arms race for original content.

For aspiring actors, filmmakers, writers, and crew members, the demand for new and original content is expected to increase. However, the likelihood of working on a syndicated TV series is set to decrease, causing many people working in the entertainment industry to look for their next opportunity continually.

The TV and film industry is going through a tremendous transformation that has never been seen before. Hollywood is moving towards launching new streaming services and spending millions of dollars in the process. Netflix and Disney are negotiating multi-million dollar deals to secure programming, which is fundamentally changing how business is done with talent.

According to the Wall Street Journal, as the number of productions released to consumer increases, seasons for shows is going to get shorter and shorter. As a result, for actors, producers, and crew members, it means moving on to new jobs more frequently.

Disney+

Disney controls Hulu and in November will release a new low-cost service called Disney+. The streaming platform will feature Marvel and Star Wars series, kid content, and original TV shows and movies. Meanwhile, Apple is launching several premium shows featuring A-list actors. WarnerMedia’s HBO Max and Comcast Peacock are set to release next year, adding to the significant competition between Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and CBS’ All Access.

BET+

BET+ is also now available. One of the key highlights of the new BET service is the partnership with Tyler Perry Studios. Tyler Perry’s back catalog of work and new content will be featured in BET+. Standup specials from Nick Cannon, Lil Rel and Sasheer Zamata and upcoming shows like “First Wives Club,” “Bigger,” and “Sacrifice.” Content from Viacom-owned brands such as VH1’s “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta,” “Basketball Wives,” “T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle,” Comedy Central’s “Why? With Hannibal Buress,” “MTV’s Todrick,” TV Land’s “Soul Man” and Nick at Night’s “Instant Mom” will also appear on the platform.

How the streaming wars is changing the film industry

Syndication

For the past 50 years, the basic formula for producers to make a lot of money is to reach 100 episodes. By achieving at least a 100 episodes, the show will have enough episodes to sell reruns from “syndication” deals. Hit TV shows such as “Seinfeld” and “Friends” have made millions of dollars following this formula.

Netflix’s business model

Ted Sarandos Netflix

Netflix changed the game when it started approaching and landing deals with major producers to make content exclusively for the platform. Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy both landed multi-million dollar deals. However, Netflix does not sell reruns. As a result, producers can not obtain syndication profits.

Netflix launched this business strategy. Now, Warner Bros and Disney are following suit. But, with so much competition and high demand for high-quality content, writers and producers are getting paid more than ever for their work.

Upront money versus syndication

By guaranteeing a large amount of money upfront, the risk of creating content to surpass 100 episodes is gone. That said, there are possible downsides. For example, if a show becomes a major hit, it does not generate the profits you would have generally obtained from reruns.

It is important to note, Disney can put a show that the company has produced on whatever platform they choose without renegotiating deals. Warner has a similar idea, which is enormous if an entertainment platform wants to move TV projects to their streaming services.

In an interview with WSJ, producer Mike Schur (“The Office” and “The Good Place)” says he is concerned about the business model Disney is using in their business deals.

“There’s a deal you make when you create a show. You guys own most of it, but I own some of it. Together we’re going to go out into the marketplace and sell it to the person who offers the most money,” Mr. Schur said. “The most strident capitalists in the world are the ones opposing a free market,” he added.

Overall

Very few shows land syndication deals. But, under this new streaming business model, it will get tough. There are no incentives to get up to 100 episodes. But, some producers are not complaining saying there is more freedom in creating fewer episodes.

‘Joker’: Joaquin Phoenix Walks Out of Interview After This Difficult Question

Joaquin Phoenix is currently doing promo for his upcoming feature film, “Joker” and walked out of an interview.

In a recent interview with “The Telegraph,” he was asked a question regarding the upcoming film’s potential influence on violence.

The new Batman spinoff movie puts Phoenix in the role of Arthur Fleck, a struggling comedian who becomes tragically rejected by the world and goes crazy becoming the Joker. The movie is R-rated and has various scenes with portraying graphic violence. Film critic Robbie Collin asked Phoenix whether “Joker” “might perversely end up inspiring exactly the kind of people it’s about, with potentially tragic results.”

Phoneix was reportedly shocked by the question and walked off the interview replying: “Why? Why would you…? No, no.” The award-winning actor was said to have returned an hour later after being convinced by Warner Bros. executives to complete the interview. He never answered the question Collin had asked him before his departure. But, Phoenix had previously declared that the violence in the movie would be more “visceral and raw” in comparison to other superhero movies. That said, he explained,  “You always want it to feel real, and you want the little violence that we have to have an impact,” Phoenix said. “What happens in a lot of movies is that you get numb to it, you’re killing 40,000 people, you don’t feel it. While being a fictional story in a fictional world, you always want it to feel real. Everything that happens in this movie as far as violence goes, you feel it.”

It is not the first time Phoenix walked off a production. The movie’s director Todd Phillips revealed that the 44-year-old actor had done the same thing on set as well.

“In the middle of the scene, he’ll just walk away and walk out. And the poor other actor thinks it’s them and it was never them. It was always him, and he just wasn’t feeling it.”

Joker will hit cinemas October 4.

Jason Bateman Shares Tips for Aspiring Actors and Directors

Ozark’s Jason Bateman shares his thoughts on acting and directing.

Jason Bateman has transcended from minor roles to leading major feature films. Now the actor is in the business of directing with the third season of his hit Netflix series ‘Ozark’, which is now filming in Georgia.

The actor currently stars on the Netflix series ‘Ozark’ and plays a disgraced accountant who is over his head with a criminal enterprise. In an interview with Gold Derby, Bateman discussed working on the show as a lead actor and a director of several episodes and working with his co-stars as an actor and director.

Bateman explains how actors need to be careful with changing their characters too much over the course of a show because the character can never be smart enough to lead to a resolution.

He explains, “The challenge with making characters smart is that things come to an end. It’s a trap in comedies. It’s also a trap in dramas. In comedies, if you get a character that gets smart, they stop making fools of themselves and pulling their pants down and losing their dignity and making dumb decisions. The same thing goes for dramas. As soon as you get smart, you call the police and the movie’s over.”

Bateman has a long history with comedic timing and comedic roles. He often plays the straight man, which can be seen in ‘Arrested Development,’ ‘Horrible Bosses,’ and ‘Game Night.’ When asked why he chooses these roles, he says, “I’m always attracted to playing a normal person that is in the middle of something that is pretty abnormal and try to become that perspective for the audience, that proxy for the audience so that what you’re witnessing is as relatable as possible.”

Bateman has directed TV and film since the late 1980s when he was only twenty years old. When asked about how acting impacts his directing he says, “For me as an actor, my personal taste of acting is to not really see a lot of acting and to have it be as naturalistic as possible, which sort of equates to being as small as possible. I try to pull that into directing as well. I try not to be too showy and try not to have too much coverage and try not to distract from the audience as much as possible.”

Bateman added, “In fact, I love things called oners where there is no coverage at all. You’re just creating a perspective for the audience that tries to shape it a little bit but gives the audience a chance to look at different things if they want to as opposed to tapping them on the shoulder every time and telling them, ‘Oh, now you’re looking this way, now you’re looking that way.’ I take the same aesthetic choice with both the acting and the directing in that I try to not bump the audience into them watching any acting or watching any directing.“

With ‘Ozark’, Bateman says he creates an environment to allow his co-stars to share their thoughts, ideas, and insight into their character during production.

“I have a very, very light touch as a director when it comes to working with actors. I just know the way that I like to work as an actor where if you do your homework, you’ve thought about the scene and you’ve tried to distill down all your ideas to the best idea. That way you’re playing that scene has to do with how you’re gonna play the scene that follows, which might not shoot for a few weeks. There’s a plan that the director might not be aware of. I’m always assuming that the actor knows what they’re doing and is doing the best possible job that they can.”

Bateman added, “I watch what it is I think they’re planning on doing and how that’s going to affect everything and encourage them to continue going down that path and maybe, ‘Would this idea help you get what you’re trying to do done better?’ That’s the only kind of conversation that I have with Laura or Julia or anybody. With Laura, there’s brevity of conversation. We finish each other’s sentences. I can come in after a take and say, ‘That was great. What about if…’ and she might not even let me get [to]it. She’ll go, ‘I know what you’re gonna say.’”
