Apple Cancel’s Premiere of Georgia-Filmed ‘The Banker’, Over “Concerns”

0

Apple cancels the premiere of ‘The Banker‘ over alleged sexual assault.

Apple TV recently launched with several TV shows and movies. These productions have featured high-profile actors including Jason Momoa and Jennifer Aniston. The tech company also released a trailer for their Georgia-filmed movie, ‘The Banker’, which stars Samuel L. Jackson and Anthony Mackie. The movie was set to premiere on December 6th and debut at Thursday night’s AFI Festival in Los Angeles, California. However, Apple canceled the premiere and Netflix’s ‘Marriage Story’ is expected to replace the Jackson movie.

What happened to ‘The Banker’?

According to Deadline, Apple TV has set plans to suspend the film. The movie, which centers around two African-American investors who decide to give back to the community, has concerns tied to the family of Anthony Mackie’s character, Bernard Garrett. Apple TV+ released a statement saying, “We purchased The Banker earlier this year as we were moved by the film’s entertaining and educational story about social change and financial literacy. Last week some concerns surrounding the film were brought to our attention. We, along with the filmmakers, need some time to look into these matters and determine the best next steps. In light of this, we are no longer premiering The Banker at AFI Fest.”

The Hollywood Reporter reveals claims from two of Bernard’s half-sisters, Cynthia and Sheila Garrett, both 15 years younger than Bernard. The sisters claim they were sexually assaulted for years during their childhood. They claim that “the timeline of the film was tweaked in order to leave the girls and their mother out of the story.”

The Hollywood Reporter says Garrett Jr. previously appeared in promo materials as one of the movie’s co-producers and was expected to be featured ruding the movie’s press tour. However, he is now uncredited and all release plans are paused for the unforeseeable future as Apple TV+ continues to investigate the situation.

About ‘The Banker’:

Anthony Mackie and Samuel L. Jackson star in one of the first Apple TV+ original films ‘The Banker’, which filmed in Atlanta, Georgia.

The two A-list actors play real-life figures, Bernard Garrett and Joe Morris. The movie is based on a true story set in the 1960s, where the two men plan to build a real estate empire for African Americans to help the black community find the American Dream. However, to accomplish their goals, they must get the help of working-class white man Matt Steiner, played by Nicholas Hoult, to become the face of the organization. The two men teach Steiner how to socialize with rich white men and create deals they would not be privileged too because of their race.

Disney+ Wins with 22 Million Downloads

0

UPDATE(December 12, 2019): Disney+ App reaches 22 million downloads.

According to a news report by Apptopia, consumers have downloaded the Disney+ app 22 million times from November 12 launch through December 10th. The Disney streaming app has been ranked No. 1 since the app launched in the App Store and Google Play store and sees an average of 9.5 million active mobile app users each day.

According to the report, Disney+ success is due to the cost of the monthly subscription service at $6.99 and the Hulu, ESPN+ bundle at $12.99, including the effective marketing campaigns by Disney.

However, Disney+ has not made an impact on their competitors. Netflix experienced a small dip in mobile traffic after the launch of Disney+, but traffic has returned to normal since Disney’s release thus illustrating consumers’ demand for entertainment.

Original Story (November 14, 2019): Following the announcement, Disney’s streaming service Disney+ received over 10 million subscribers in just one day.

The company’s stock saw its biggest one-day gain since April and reaching an all-time high since January 1972. As of this morning, Disney gained 7.3 percent, culminating to $148.72 per share. According to reports, Disney’s shares are up 32% this year.

Analysts say Disney’s download rate is doing extremely well and better than expected. It appears as though the initial tech problems did not affect Disney at all.

This news comes after Disney’s streaming service Disney+ gained 10 million subscribers one day. The company announced on November 13 and confirmed they will not be releasing Disney+ subscriber data outside of the Disney company’s quarterly earnings calls.

“It’s impossible to compare, with any insight coming from it, first-day downloads of Netflix to that of Disney+,” a report from Apptopia states. “Streaming was not what it is today and mobile is not what it is today, as mobile device penetration and user preferences have shifted in Disney’s favor.”

Mr. Lee Casting Sides:

VO Audition: Lee
Lee is a 1st generation Chinese immigrant with an accent that is readily noticeable.

1.
Lee is carving a pair of figurines out of wood for his children. They sit on the carpet watching daytime television at his feet. Lee’s daughter, Allie, asks about the figurine that he has carved for her. This is Lee being the best version of himself.
LEE: This? Good, yes? She’s a superhero. Someone strong and fast and very pretty. She can jump so high, she can leap over the mountains and touch the clouds. Then she carries the clouds home, and puts them on her ice cream. She is just like you.
2.
Lee sits at the dinner table with his two young children Marcus (12) and Allie (7). They eat in silence, avoiding eye contact. Lee lost at the track earlier that day and needs to go out of town to get a loan.
LEE: Listen. I’m going away for a few days. Marcus, keep an eye on your sister, okay? (no response) I said okay. Good. No trouble when I’m gone, understand? If you need anything, call Mr. Jones next door. Keep the house clean, too. Okay. Allie, finish your vegetables.
3.
Lee has found a carton of cigarettes in his son Marcus’ backpack. The two stare each other down in Marcus’ bedroom.
LEE: What is this? What the hell is this? You know better, Marcus. The next time you decide to bring cigarettes into this house, you’re out. You’re done.
4.
Lee sits at a dingy bar, deep in a glass of cheap whiskey. He just lost most of his savings at the track. He catches the eye of another patron slouched next to him.
LEE: It’s all bullshit, isn’t it? The whole thing. No matter how hard you work, no matter what you do, you can lose it all in a day. An hour, even. But they don’t know. They keep your money when I have kids to feed. What do they expect me to do, huh? Are you listening, mister? Huh? Hmph. It’s all bullshit.

5.
Lee is putting his children to bed. He turns out the light to their room and makes a move to close the door. Before he does, his son, Marcus, asks about their mother. Lee pauses in the doorway.
LEE: Your mother? She was a very good person. Let’s not speak of it anymore.
6.
Lee has left his home, and his children, and is interviewing with a fishing captain about work. The captain has asked Lee to describe himself.
LEE: I work hard. Very hard. I know what it’s like to be hungry, so I work harder. You hire me, you won’t regret it.
7.
The boat that Lee works on begins to sink. The crew abandons ship and huddles in a life raft. As the storm rages, their odds of survival look grim. They ask about each other’s families while they wait for the inevitable. They turn to Lee and ask if he has any children. He pauses, and then:
LEE: No.
