Do You Need a Modeling Portfolio?

0
Modeling Portfolio – What is it?

A modeling portfolio is a collection of your modeling pictures. How many photos you need in your modeling portfolio varies. But, you should only keep strong pictures, remember, you are only as talented and beautiful as your worst picture!

Models should not aim for quantity but instead for quality. Avoid using 2 pictures that have the same look, and typically black and white is a industry favorite so, it is important to keep a few black and white photos in your portfolio.

A basic but versatile portfolio would have a casual headshot, a styled head shot, a conservative body shot, a fashion shot, an action shot, an editorial shot, and finally a catalogue shot. Each photo should be different, and should illustrate your versatility.  As you gain experience replace the older photos with new pictures and keep your best picture at the end to leave a lasting impression!

It is important to not wear jewelry for these prints, since it may take the attention away from you, and instead place it on something not as important. Remember, each photo is to impress the casting director, talent agent, or photographer. Tailor your portfolio to your strengths and the type of modelling you are interested in doing.

Portfolio Tips

The tools to land you more projects and gigs are your portfolio photographs and your resume. Your Portfolio is a model’s basic promotional instrument. Use your portfolio to demonstrate your versatility and always utilize your best photos.

At the start of your modeling career, your portfolio should include:

  • At least two head shots with two different expressions. For example, having one photo smiling and the next in a serious face. Or, it is possible to shoot one photo in the studio and the other outdoors.
  • At least two fashion shots. For example, one casual photo and the next should be a formal picture.
  • If you are able to be flexible or move easily, include an action shot.
  • You should also have at least one full-length shot showing your body. For example, a photo should show your feet to knees, or knees to thighs. Wear something that shows your body but is still very flattering to your figure.
  • A full portfolio will contain about twenty to twenty four “9×12” pictures and tears from recent magazine publications.
  • It is better to have less photos, but ones that really point out your strengths, than a portfolio full of mediocre pictures.
A strong portfolio opens doors, and a weak portfolio closes them. Your portfolio is often the only thing a casting director, a photographer, or talent agent sees before deciding whether or not to contact you, and in many cases you may not be present to explain particular weaknesses.
If you take the time to review and select your work, and put together a well thought out modeling portfolio, you will be rewarded many times over throughout your career.

How to Become a Model

How to become a model – a guide to learning how to become a model

Modeling is an excellent job for people who love fashion and being in the spotlight. If you have always dreamed of becoming a model, there are some things that you should know first about the industry. It’s not as easy as it looks to be a successful model, so I’ve put together this list of tips to help you get started.

YOU CAN DO IT! The first step is to realize that you can do it. Modeling isn’t just for naturally skinny and beautiful people who live in big cities and work the runway. Modeling is a great career path for anyone looking to gain some valuable experience, make money, and have fun along the way. If you think you can meet the challenges, you’re already on your way. Modeling is an industry that has achieved international status, and lots of people are beginning to get jobs as models.

Modeling can be an excellent job for just about anyone who has the determination and commitment to succeed at it. Modeling doesn’t require any education, but some people study to understand the industry better. Modeling can be done part-time, which is suitable for students in high school or college. Modeling is also one of those careers that you can take with you wherever you go. Modeling doesn’t require any certification because people decide whether you are qualified to work as a model based on your looks. Modeling is a great way to become well-rounded because you are constantly meeting new people, learning new things, and gaining self-confidence in yourself.

How to become a model

  1. Know your body type
  2. Practice posing for photos
  3. Dress to impress
  4. Get a portfolio together
  5. Network with people in the industry and sign up with agencies
  6. Find work that you enjoy doing and take care of yourself so you can be successful!

Know Your Body Type

Modeling is not just for good-looking people with perfect bodies. It takes lots of different personalities to make the world go round, so there is room for all kinds of talents. Modeling works because it’s eye candy for people. Modeling is about selling an image, so you have to find the type of modeling that suits your personality and figure. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you’re not perfect; many people out there don’t meet the exact physical requirements that magazines look for in models every day.

Practice posing for photos

One of the best ways to get more comfortable being in front of a camera is to practice posing for a friend. Have a friend take many photos of you and pick out your favorite ones to keep around as inspiration. Also, try taking your pictures! Modeling agencies love it when you can put together an online portfolio with images that you have taken.

Dress to Impress

If you are called back for a modeling job, that means an agency thinks you have the potential to work as a model. That’s great! However, there is one more step before they can hire you. When you go in person to their office, make sure to dress up beyond the expected standards. Modeling agencies will not call you back if they think that you don’t look like a model or if your hair and makeup are not done up to par.

Get a Portfolio Together

Get all the necessary prints together for your portfolio once you know what type of modeling you’d like to do. Modeling agencies want to see various photos to get an idea about your personality and ability. Modeling agencies will not hire you if they don’t have a portfolio that reflects who you are, so it’s up to you to ensure that your portfolio is perfect.

You will need a modeling portfolio. A modeling portfolio is a selection of pictures showing yourself in different poses and outfits. The standard size for photos is nine by 12 inches and will need about 10 to 12 images. Make sure to focus on the quality of the pictures and not on the quantity. You want to impress the talent agency, casting director, or fashion designer with each photo in your modeling portfolio. Make sure your modeling portfolio has a selection of both headshots and full-body shots. Also, you would like to make sure you are getting a variety of different looks such as swimwear, catalog, lingerie, night club, wedding, funerals; the more diverse, the better. Even better is a different look, such as black and white shots, and avoid using the same image. It can be in your best interest to have other photographers for a portfolio; This will show your versatility in terms of different styles, and it will show that a model can work with a diverse group of people. However, before going ahead with a  photo session, ask to look at the photographer’s portfolio to see if you like their style of photography. If you have never done photography before, this is a perfect chance to have a practice run. However, avoid photographers wanting to take nude shots; if possible, take a friend with you to the shoot.

Network with People in the Industry and Sign Up With Agencies

Once you feel like you’re ready to get into modeling, start meeting people in the industry. Modeling agencies know everything about all of the jobs that are available and who is perfect for them. Modeling agencies will not consider you unless you tell them that you’re interested. Modeling agencies need someone to bring new talent on board, so make sure they can find you! Modeling agencies will not call you back unless they know where you are!

Most agencies require that you visit them. Book an appointment ahead of time by phone. Please bring at least two pictures (they do not have to be professional photos)—a natural and bright headshot and a full-length shot showing your figure. Perhaps a beautiful dress, swimsuit, but something that illustrates your body shape. Do not wear baggy clothes; it will look like you have something to hide. Ask a lot of questions. See this opportunity, similar to an actual job interview. Ask to see what their current models are doing, ask for names and phone numbers of clients and call them to verify the information, and be concerned if they promise you high salaries right away. If they do not allow you time to think about it or pressure you to sign a contract, be very cautious. Again, modeling agencies should not ask for money upfront for classes or training.

An agency or coordinator should represent the model or yourself. The model must have a portfolio and comp cards. The agency should provide you with work, and they should only get paid a commission for every gig they book you. If the agency requires payment before getting a modeling job, they are not working for your best interest. Golden Rule – Do not go with an agency that asks for money upfront! You will most likely never hear from them again, and I indeed doubt you will get any work from them. Also, ask to check to see if they are reputable and genuine. The agency/coordinator should provide you with a safe working environment and looks after legal problems associated with paperwork for each job. But, keep copies of the paperwork such as contracts, etc. You may need these in the future if there is a legal dispute. Choose your agency carefully!

Find Work That You Enjoy Doing and Take Care of Yourself So You Can Be Successful

One of the most important things that it takes to be successful in modeling is dedication. Modeling is hard work, but the result is so rewarding. Modeling can only take you as far as you are willing to go, so make sure always to be the best version of yourself. To find job opportunities, check out Project Casting. Project Casting is the best site in the world for finding work in your area! Modeling is a great way to get out of the house and meet new people, so enjoy yourself!

Top Ten Modeling Tips

  1. Always be on time. Punctuality is crucial.
  2. Always go prepared. Clothing changes that you know will fit you. Don’t ever think that someone else has everything you need for a photoshoot.
  3. Always bring your makeup.
  4. Get references, and get as many as you can. That would include other models, photographers, and talent agents. Also, be sure that a legitimate photographer is doing the same with you. It would be best if you never took anything for granted.
  5. Get phone numbers and addresses. If they are hesitant, then reconsider the photoshoot.
  6. Make sure you know what the photoshoot will consist of. Never feel pressured to do anything that you do not feel comfortable doing if anything else goes with your gut feeling before a scheduled photoshoot.
  7. Always bring cash just in case of emergencies.
  8. Keep in mind that modeling is a business. So, be prepared to negotiate with prospective employers regarding pay and content. Do not just drop a photoshoot because you do not like what the company is offering you; negotiate until you get something you want. It is always okay to say, “Thank you, but no thank you.” You never know the employer you turn down today will be a star tomorrow, so treat everyone with respect and stay humbled.
  9. Don’t ever do anything you might be sorry for later. What you do today can affect your career in the long run.
  10. If you have a verbal or signed agreement on traveling expenses, make sure that it is followed. Written contracts are always the best.

Spike TV’s Ink Master Season 3 Tattoo Artist Home Video Tips and Suggestions:
  • Please submit a home video- no longer than 3 minutes.
  • We want to see your personality from the moment you start. What makes you unique?
  • Introduce yourself (name, occupation, current location etc.).
  • Talk about your art and tattoo background (How long have you been tattooing? How’d you get started? What are other art fields have you worked in? What inspired you? Schooling?)
  • Sum up your tattooing style in one sentence and then feel free to explain it in further detail.
  • What do you love about being a tattoo artist? Why is it your passion?
  • Talk about one of your favorite tattoo artists. Tell us how that person has influenced you.
  • Tell us why you want to prove to the world that you are an Ink Master and why you think you will win.
  • Show us a part of your life. What is important to you? You do not need to show yourself tattooing anyone. We want to hear you talking throughout the entire tape.
  • Try not to be more than 10 feet from the camera, as the sound will be too faint.

  • Avoid being backlit- you should never have a video or bright light behind you, but we do suggest opening the blinds to fill the room with light.

Biopic – “Straight Outta Compton” are currently being scheduled and casting directors are currently seeking actors to play lead roles in the upcoming motion picture. The “Straight Outta Compton” is produced by Ice Cube and will be directed by F. Gary Gray. Producers have decided to hold open auditions to aspiring actors who can realistically portray the members of N.W.A. when they were teens and young adults.

F. Gary Gray previously worked on “The Italian Job” now his upcoming project “Straight Outta Compton” will illustrate the rise of one of the most influential rap groups to ever hit mainstream radios across the countries, N.W.A.

N.W.A. is the group that gave rise to greats such as Easy- E, Dr. Dre, and Ice Cube. Now, the film directors are looking for aspiring actors who can effectively act and portray these rap icons when they were part of N.W.A.

So can you rap? Do you look like a young Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy E, Yella or MC Ren? If you do, here is your chance.

“Straight Outta Compton” casting call has been released several months ago, but casting for this project is still ongoing after a rough pre-production start according to Cinemablend. But, according to Kim Coleman’s Twitter @KTC_Casting she is still reviewing actors information for the upcoming motion picture.

 Roles

[ EAZY-E (ERIC WRIGHT) ]
African American, 21, A streetwise and business savvy dope dealer
turned rapper/record producer/business owner. Small in stature but
with a big heart, big dreams and big ideas. Created NWA with Dr. Dre
by gathering a group of talented contemporaries with similar street
backgrounds. Argumentative, secretive and always the hustler. Known
more for his sheer bravado than actual rapping skill, he made it
happen. (LEAD)

[ ICE CUBE (O’SHEA JACKSON) ]

African American, 18, a smart burly kid with a gift for gab and an ear
for rhymes. He was the brains behind most of the lyrics that
eventually changed the world of rap. A hard hitting writer who was
skeptical of Eazy- E’s and Jerry Heller’s business practices. Arrogant
and outspoken but charming as well. Smart and more of a counter
puncher than a troublemaker. Headstrong and determined to do things
his way on his terms. (LEAD)

[ DR. DRE (ANDRE YOUNG) ]
African American, 19, a tall cool experienced record pro when he
joined NWA. Was already a hood celebrity. Had clout in the
neighborhood and credibility in the clubs. He knew his way around the
studio. The engine of the group and molded their overall sound. He was
always willing to experiment in order to stay ahead of the game. One
of the architects of the West Coast sound. Just wanted to make music
above everything else. Was the glue that brought everyone together.
(LEAD)

[ MC REN (LORENZO PATTERSON) ]
African American, 18, A co-writer of the lyrics on Straight Outta
Compton. A running mate and friend of Eazy- E. Took over bulk of lyric
writing after Ice Cube departed. (LEAD)

[ DJ YELLA (ANTOINE CARRABY) ]
African American, 20, Another local DJ who worked the same clubs as
Dr. Dre. He co-produced the debut album with Dre. Went on to direct
hundreds of films in the adult film industry. (LEAD)

[ JERRY HELLER ]
45, A savvy experienced rock and roll manager who always got the best
deal he could for himself and his acts. A little past his prime, and
some would say somewhat of an ambulance chaser. Hooked up with Eazy-E
to create Ruthless Records. Became very close to Eazy-E and almost
acted as a father figure. His relationship with Eazy-E was always a
source of dissension within the group.

STORY LINE: A gritty no holds barred look at the historic rap group
NWA – from their Compton roots, through their groundbreaking success,
to their eventual break-up. Part celebration and part cautionary tale
– a story that reflects all of the anger, violence and insanity of the
late 80?s, early 90?s in Los Angeles and America at large.

How To Be an Extra

0
What is an Extra?

Extras also known as background actors are people just like you that make the background scenes of your favorite movies and television shows come alive. Check out a clip from American Reunion, the American Pie sequel that was filmed in Atlanta last year. All those bar patrons in the background? They’re extras! So are the students at Mystic Falls High School on The Vampire Diaries, every zombie on The Walking Dead, the lacrosse team on Teen Wolf and the football players on Necessary Roughness (all of which are — you guessed it! — filmed in Atlanta).

How Much Do Extras Get Paid?

Extras who work in Atlanta typically get paid either $58/8, $60/8 or $64/8, depending on the production. What’s that boil down to? About $7.25, $7.50 or $8 per hour. Yes, it’s minimum wage BUT most filming days last 12 – 14 hours, which means you’ll earn time-and-a-half for every hour you work after the first eight hours.

Here’s an example:

Let’s say you work 12 hours on the set of The Vampire Diaries, which pays the standard rate of $58/8. You’ll earn $7.25/hr for the first eight hours and then $10.88/hr for the final four hours, which would add up to about $101.50. Not too bad for spending the day on the set of a hit TV show, huh?

But, in certain locations such as New York City, and Los Angeles the going rate for a background actor is $150+ to $300+.
If you’re interested in making MORE MONEY on set (who isn’t?), keep an eye out for “featured extra” and “specialty” requests. Featured extras typically get more time in front of the camera, while specialty extras are cast because they have a unique ability that’s being used in the scene, such as juggling, dancing or playing tennis. Both can be paid a higher rate, but it’s up to the production company to decide.

Your best bet for earning more than the usual rate is to become a stand in. Stand ins take the place of actors while the crew sets up lights and other important elements of a shot and are typically employed for the entire duration of a shoot, which can last anywhere from one to eight months. Stand ins usually have the same skin tone, hair color, height and weight of the actors they’re standing in for so if you look like an actor or actress that’s filming in Atlanta, you could have a shot at making between $110/12 ($9.16/hr) and $140/12 ($11.67/hr).

Who Gets Picked to be an Extra?
What Sort of People Get Hired to Work as Extras in Movies & TV Shows

Different scenes need different extras. When a scene is about to be filmed, the producers of the movie or television show ask the extras casting agency to find people with a specific look, age, sex or talent — whatever is needed to make the scene feel real.

Tips For Getting Booked
How to Get Chosen to Extra

The people who get picked to be extras most often are the ones who:

  • fit the look
  • respond quickly to a Facebook post or e-mail
  • have a reputation for being on time and professional on set
  • FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS!

Tip #1: If a casting agency posts something like this on Facebook: “Seeking Upscale Males and Females ages 40 – 60+ ONLY. Washington/Banker/Politican’s Wife types. Men should have very nice dark business suits and women upscale cocktail dresses.” ONLY submit if you fit the description! Consider the ages and wardrobe requested. If you look much younger or older than the requested age or you don’t have the appropriate clothing, do NOT reply to the post. This just wastes the casting director’s time and may make it difficult for you to find work in the future.Tip #2: If a casting agency is looking for folks to work an all-day shoot on Thursday, ONLY submit if you are 100% positive you can work! If you have a dentist appointment or soccer game at 4 p.m. the night of a shoot, you probably shouldn’t apply to work. Filming days often last 12 – 14 hours and leaving early will only make it harder for you to get booked again (not to mention that you won’t get paid for the day!).

Tip #3: You don’t need a professional headshot to get booked as an extra but you DEFINITELY need a high-quality photo of yourself. This means no blurry Facebook photos, group shots or school pictures. The best photos are the ones that show casting agents what you ACTUALLY look like. You don’t have to be tall, thin and/or incredibly beautiful to work as an extra but casting agents will be less likely to use you if they think you don’t look anything like the photos you submit.

“The Last of Robin Hood” Bio-Pic of Errol Flynn Casting Information

0

Casting directors are now casting actors to play various roles for the upcoming feature film, “Last of Robin Hood”. This is a great opportunity, if you are in the surrounding Atlanta area, and if you are interested in taking your acting career to the next level.

“The Last of Robin Hood” is a biopic that will follow the final days of the Hollywood legend Errol Flynn. Errol Flynn lived a complicated life, which leading him to a fatal heart attack at the young age of 50.

Errol Flynn will be played by the Academy Award winner Kevin Kline. According to Variety, “Kline recently starred in Robert Redford’s period pic “The Conspirator” and Lawrence Kasdan’s drama “Darling Companion.” Thesp is attached to play multiple roles in Charlie Kaufman’s long-gestating Hollywood satire “Frank or Francis,” and he’ll soon begin shooting CBS Films’ comedy “Last Vegas” with Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas and Morgan Freeman.”

On the Hollywood silver screen Flynn was as charming as you can imagine, playing upright heroes like the 1938 classic The Adventures of Robin Hood. However, behind the screens his life was much more controversial. He filled his personal life with boozing, drug abuse, womanizing of gargantuan proportions and an array of scandals culminating in being charged with statutory rape.
