Denzel Washington Confirmed for Black Panther 3: A Cinematic Milestone in the Making

Hollywood royalty Denzel Washington is officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Black Panther 3, according to writer-director Ryan Coogler. The collaboration between Washington and Coogler—two of the most influential names in film—marks a defining moment not just for the franchise, but for cinematic history as a whole.

During an episode of the 7PM in Brooklyn podcast aired on June 5, Coogler shared his excitement about finally working with the Oscar-winning legend. “Denzel is family at this point,” he told host Carmelo Anthony. “I’ve been trying to work with him since day one. I think he’s the greatest living actor. In terms of what he means to our culture—forget about it.”

The Collaboration Fans Have Been Waiting For

Washington, 70, hinted at the role months earlier in a November 2024 interview, catching even Coogler off guard.

“I was surprised when he mentioned it, but it’s not like it’s not true,” Coogler admitted on the podcast.

Speaking on Australia’s Today show, Washington openly confirmed Coogler was writing a role specifically for him in Black Panther 3, adding:

“After that, I’m going to do Othello. After that, King Lear. After that, I’m going to retire.”

This trio of projects reflects a powerful closing chapter in Washington’s acclaimed career.

A Legacy Role in the Making

At this stage in his career, Washington is selective about his roles, emphasizing the importance of working with top-tier talent.

“For me, it’s about the filmmakers. Especially at this point in my career, I am only interested in working with the best,” Washington said. “I don’t know how many more films I’m going to make. I want to do things I haven’t done.”

His choice to collaborate with Coogler—whose storytelling has continually elevated Black narratives—underscores the cultural weight of this next installment.

What’s Next for Denzel Washington?

Before stepping into the Marvel Universe, Washington will appear in Highest 2 Lowest, directed by his longtime collaborator Spike Lee. The film is scheduled for release in August 2025, and Coogler couldn’t be more excited.

“That trailer—the monologue. Denzel is in rare form,” Coogler said on the podcast. “When Spike and Denzel get together, it’s always a masterpiece.”

The anticipation for Highest 2 Lowest further proves Washington’s continued box-office draw and artistic evolution.

Coogler’s Busy Creative Run

Ryan Coogler himself has had a banner year. His latest film, Sinners, was released in May 2025, starring Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, and newcomer Miles Caton. The film explores the journey of twin brothers returning to their hometown to confront a lurking evil, blending psychological horror with social commentary.

Coogler recently screened Sinners for his mentor Spike Lee, calling the experience “surreal.”

“For me to give Spike a cinematic experience—I’m just paying him back with interest, bro,” Coogler said emotionally. “It meant the world to me… I cried.”

A Look Ahead: Black Panther 3 in 2028

The legacy of Black Panther continues to expand. Following the tragic loss of Chadwick Boseman, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) carried the emotional weight of honoring his memory while moving the story forward.

Now, with Washington joining the cast, Black Panther 3—set to premiere in February 2028—promises a fresh chapter that blends gravitas, artistry, and star power.

While plot details remain under wraps, the inclusion of Washington suggests a character of significant depth and narrative importance. Whether he’s cast as an ally, a mentor, or a formidable new antagonist, one thing is certain: his presence will elevate the film’s cultural and cinematic impact.

Why This Matters to Industry Professionals

For actors, directors, and creatives, the collaboration between Coogler and Washington signals a continued commitment to diverse storytelling at the highest level. Their union offers inspiration to Black filmmakers and rising talents aiming to tell bold, uncompromising stories within mainstream entertainment.

This isn’t just a casting announcement—it’s a moment that reflects how excellence, vision, and legacy come together to reshape modern cinema.
