Casting Call: Performers for VELOUR: A DRAG SPECTACULAR
Job Description:
TBD Casting Co., in collaboration with La Jolla Playhouse and Tectonic Theater Project, is excited to announce casting calls for “VELOUR: A DRAG SPECTACULAR”. This immersive theatrical experience is inspired by the life and art of Sasha Velour, a genderfluid artist who rose from a small-town child to a globally-renowned drag superstar. The production is set to be a captivating collage of projection mapping, video animation, lip-sync performances, and powerful personal narratives. We are in search of three dynamic queer nightlife performers to join this world premiere event.
Job Responsibilities:

Deliver mesmerizing performances, with a focus on drag, but possibly including burlesque, ballroom, and other queer performance art forms.

Participate in lip-sync battles and deliver compelling storytelling through movement and expression.

Work collaboratively with the director, choreographer, and other cast members.

Attend all rehearsals and perform in all scheduled shows.

Engage with innovative multimedia elements, such as projection mapping and video animation.
Requirements:

Must identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community, specifically within the queer nightlife scene.

Strong stage presence and the ability to captivate an audience.

Experience in drag, burlesque, ballroom, or other related performance arts.

Openness to sharing personal narratives and integrating them into the performance.

Must be based in the U.S., with a special call for San Diego-based performers.

Availability to commit to the summer schedule at La Jolla Playhouse.

A new theatre production, Liberation, is seeking a talented Kenyan or East African actor to portray Jomo Kenyatta. This production, co-produced by the Manchester International Festival and the Manchester Royal Exchange, will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Pan-African Congress held in Manchester in 1945. The play is music and movement-based, creating a powerful ensemble-driven experience.
Job Responsibilities
- Portray Jomo Kenyatta, a 54-year-old Kenyan anti-colonial activist and political leader
- Deliver an authentic and compelling performance reflecting the wisdom and leadership qualities of Kenyatta
- Collaborate with the ensemble cast in a movement and music-based production
- Participate in rehearsals and production meetings as required
Requirements
- Male actor of Kenyan or East African heritage, aged 45-57
- Must confidently deliver a Kenyan accent
- Strong stage presence with the ability to embody the character’s charisma and wisdom
- Prior theatre experience preferred but not required
- Available for production dates: 26 July – 26 August 2025
