Watch Kelly Marie Tran‘s audition for the Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi was written and directed by Ryan Johnson. The second movie of the Star Wars sequel trilogy and the eighth movie in the franchise. Produced by Lucasfilm and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
The Last Jedi was part of a new trilogy of movies announced after Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm in October 2012. The movie went on to gross over $1.3 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of 2017, the 6th-highest-ever grossing film in the United States and the 9th-highest-grossing film of all-time.
But one of the biggest surprises to the movie was young actress Kelly Marie Train, who played the role of Rose. Rose seems like a minor member of the Resistance who becomes an important part of the plan to take down the First Order in the movie.
As one would expect, casting a character in the Star Wars movies involves hundreds of auditions. So what made Tran stand out? The video below features clips of Tran’s audition alongside co-star John Boyega and includes clips of director Rian Johnson explaining what he was looking for in casting Rose — and why Tran was in his mind the right person for the part.
