Before David Harbour became popular for his role in the hit TV series ‘Stranger Things,’ he explored a variety of character roles in TV series and films, one of which was Steven Spielberg’s ‘War of the Worlds.’ According to the actor, his scene in the 2005 sci-fi film was cut, leaving a scar in his memory.
Harbour’s Scene Cut from Spielberg’s Flick
The production of ‘War of the Worlds’ credited Harbour as a dock worker. His character was featured in a scene with Tom Cruise, wherein both were engaging in a bar. However, the scene never made it to the final cut of the film. This information came to light during Harbour’s recent interview with Yahoo!.
The nature of the scene was such that it didn’t have any major influence on the film’s plot. Despite harbouring some intuition that the scene would be cut given its lack of significance, Harbour agreed to it, primarily owing to his excitement about working under Spielberg’s direction.
Harbour reminisced, “We had a little scene in this bar…And we shot it and I remember thinking it was probably going to get cut…He [Spielberg] cast me. And then, you know, it just got cut, just never wound up in the movie.”
Spielberg Forgets Working with Harbour
Adding salt to the wound was Spielberg’s apparent oblivion about Harbour’s past association with him. The duo met again during the table read for another project where Spielberg lauded Harbour’s performance in ‘Revolutionary Road,’ quite oblivious of their work together on the ‘War of the Worlds.’
Harbour retold this encounter with Spielberg, “[Spielberg] came up to me…and he was just ‘Oh, David, I just want to say I really love you in Revolutionary Road. I think you’re just terrific…I really one day would love to work with you.’ And I did not bring up the fact that we had already worked together and he had cut me out of his movie.”
While Spielberg’s amnesia might have been unintentional, it had a significant impact on Harbour’s memory of the director. Despite the unfortunate event, it hadn’t deterred David Harbour’s career progression that appears unfettered today.
Having showcased his mettle in the Sam Mendes-directed flick, ‘Revolutionary Road’ produced by Spielberg’s production company, DreamWorks Pictures, Harbour caught the eye of the industry. He also reprised his Red Guardian role in Marvel’s ‘Black Widow,’ and he is now filming for the fifth and final season of ‘Stranger Things.’ Spielberg is yet to cast Harbour in any of his movies post the ‘War of the Worlds’ incident.
Today, both ‘War of the Worlds’ and ‘Revolutionary Road’ are available for streaming on Paramount+. Despite past disappointments, David Harbour continues his journey in the Hollywood industry, aiming for greater heights.
