Updated October 2026.
TL;DR: New York is stacked this month. NCIS: New York premiered October 6 and is shooting its first season across Brooklyn and the five boroughs. Netflix has three series in production in the city — The Roman, Myron Bolitar, and The Retrievals — A24’s Martha starts principal photography, and the Law & Order machine keeps its weekly location grind. Background and day-player calls are posting now.
What’s Filming in New York City in October 2026
NCIS: New York — Season 1 (CBS / Paramount+). The newest entry in the NCIS franchise launched October 6, 2026, and production is running across Brooklyn and the five boroughs. The cast is led by LL Cool J, Scott Caan, and Jennifer Beals. A first-season network procedural is one of the best background opportunities in the business: every episode needs precinct staff, crime-scene crowds, witnesses, and street scenes, week after week.
The Roman (working title: Vegas) (Netflix). From Brian Koppelman and David Levien, with Martin Scorsese executive producing, this series has been filming in Brooklyn since July 20 and runs through December 4, 2026. Oscar Isaac, Alec Baldwin, and Betty Gilpin star. A long Brooklyn shoot with a cast this size means sustained background demand well into the fall.
Myron Bolitar — Season 1 (Netflix). David E. Kelley’s adaptation of Harlan Coben’s novels has been filming across New York and New Jersey since July, continuing through the fall (October/November). Colin Woodell, KJ Apa, and Diane Guerrero lead the cast. Sports-agency and suburban storylines mean a wide range of background types, from office staff to spectators.
The Retrievals (Netflix). This limited series from showrunner Molly Smith Metzler and LuckyChap began filming in New York in mid-September 2026 and runs through mid-February 2027 — the longest shoot on this list. Long productions are where recurring background bookings come from: get on the roster early and you can work the same show for months.
Martha (A24). The feature film directed by Ramy Youssef and co-written and produced by Josh Safdie begins principal photography in New York in October 2026. It was still in pre-production as the month opened, so casting activity will build as the shoot gets underway — exactly the window when background and day-player needs get posted.
Law & Order / Law & Order: SVU (NBC). The franchise that never stops. Both series shoot on location across the city every week — crews were spotted on the West Side and near Union Square the week of October 5. These shows are the steadiest background employers in New York television, and they hire constantly.
Why October Is a Strong Month for NYC Talent
Look at the shape of this slate: one brand-new network franchise establishing itself, three Netflix series at different stages of long shoots, an A24 feature starting up, and the Dick Wolf procedurals running on schedule. That’s every category of hiring at once — series regulars’ supporting casts, day players, featured background, and bulk extra work. Productions at different stages also means calls post on a rolling basis all month rather than in one burst.
How to Get Cast on New York City Productions
- Keep a current Project Casting profile. New York background casting moves at the fastest pace in the country. Casting teams pull from talent databases daily, and a stale headshot or outdated availability is an invisible pass. Make sure your photos, sizes, and contact info are current.
- Watch the casting calls board. Browse casting calls for New York productions and set alerts for background and extra work. The NCIS: New York and Law & Order calls move within hours, not days.
- Target the long shoots. The Retrievals runs through mid-February 2027 and The Roman through December 4. Getting booked once on a long-running production puts you in the pool for recurring calls across the whole shoot.
- Be submit-ready. Headshots, a short reel if you have one, accurate measurements, and honest availability. When a Brooklyn unit needs forty people for Thursday, the talent who submits complete materials in the first hour gets the call.
- Say yes to background first. On a slate like this, background work is the entry point — it’s how casting teams learn your face, your reliability, and your set etiquette before day-player roles come up.
