Here’s why the ratings for the Emmys saw a double-digit drop.
According to Nielsen, the 71st Emmy Awards gained the attention of 6.9 million total viewers on Fox last night. The award celebration got a 1.6 rating amount the key demographic of adults ages 18 to 49.
The annual special saw a 33% drop in 18 to 49-year-olds and a 32% drop overall from last year. NBC’s 2018 awards show saw a prior historic low of 2.4 ratings with 10.2 million viewers.
It is important to note the Emmy Awards had a lot of competition. The 2018 Emmys did not compete against primetime NFL football on broadcast television like 2019’s 71st Emmy Awards. Sunday Night Football on NBC had a 12.8 overnight rating, which essentially guarantees a poor outcome for the Emmys.
That said, the 2019 Emmys had a pretty great lead-in. Most of America watched the New York Giants come back and defeat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The New York Giants showcased a rookie quarterback, Daniel Jones, making his first start.
