Spielberg’s ‘Nightmare’ Scene For Alfred Molina Involved Real Tarantulas

Date:

Key Takeaways:

– Acclaimed actor Alfred Molina’s debut role in Spielberg’s Raiders of the Ark involved a terrifying scene with live tarantulas.
– Molina recollected the horrifying ordeal in a behind-the-scenes documentary.
– The actor unknowingly compensated for the traumatic incident by playing Doc Ock in 2, a character who exacts revenge on a creature synonymous with spiders.

Alfred Molina’s Arachnid Encounter in Raiders of the Lost Ark

Over his impressive four-plus-decade , Alfred Molina has donned various iconic , showcasing his prowess as a versatile actor. However, his most commendable enactment was arguably his debut in Steven Spielberg’s Return of the Lost Ark.

This from 1981 saw Molina play Satipo in a role whose brevity contrasts with its impact. Despite minimal screen time, Molina had to face an arachnoid ordeal that haunts many ‘s nightmares. Unlike ‘s Spider-Man, which demanded no spider interactions, the behind-the-scene nightmare Molina endured was entirely thanks to Spielberg.

Spielberg’s Spider Prank for Molina

Molina’s debut entailed more than merely emoting. He had to perform scenes involving real tarantulas crawling over him, a prospect that would unsettle most. In one sequence from the 1981 film, Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) and Molina’s character, Satipo, inadvertently stir a spider in a booby-trapped South American temple.

In a behind-the-scenes documentary of Raiders of the Lost Ark’s making, Molina revealed chilling details about shooting that infamous scene. Reminiscing his first experience in front of the camera, Molina revealed his surprise at Spielberg’s unexpected directive to include live tarantulas. The scene was filmed on the very first day, marking his literal baptism by spiders.

The actor further narrated the crude trick Spielberg pulled to make the spiders seem more animated. After initially placing a couple of dozen male tarantulas on Molina, Spielberg complained they looked inactive and fake. The spider wrangler then stated adding a female would incite fights among them. Without missing a beat, Spielberg took the advice and had a female tarantula introduced into the mix.

Revenge on Spiders in Spider-Man 2

In a strange twist of fate, Molina had his chance to confront his spider-adversaries in Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man 2. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice actor landed the part of Dr. Otto Octavius, or Doc Ock. His character, initially a benign scientist mentoring Peter Parker, devolves into a villain following a disastrous experiment that kills his wife and fuses mechanical limbs into his spine.

Octavius, as Doc Ock, conflict with Spider-Man features prominently in the movie’s plot. Using his mechanical tentacles, Molina’s character assaults Spider-Man, embodying a metaphorical revenge on the spiders that caused his earlier distress.

While Molina didn’t directly confront real spiders in this film, he ironically fought one indirectly on the big screen. This particular twist adds a layer of recursive symbolism to Molina’s multi-decade journey from Raiders of the Lost Ark to Spider-Man 2.

can access both Raiders of the Lost Ark and Spider-Man 2 on Prime Video to enjoy Molina’s and his journey from a spider-victim to a spider-avenger.
