While the movies that were the most pirated in 2015 may not come as a surprise but, how much they were illegally downloaded is a surprise.
Some of the biggest blockbusters at the box office this year proved that they were just as popular offline. For example, Furious 7, Avengers Age of Ultron and Jurassic World were all downloaded and watched nearly a billion times.
Interstellar was the most downloaded movie of 2015, owing to the fact that movies from the previous year spend more time circulating among illegal downloaders, the same thing happened last year with Wolf of Wall Street, according to Variety.

This news comes as one of the biggest piracy groups in the world, Hive-CM8 halted their plans to leak dozens of 2015’s biggest movies, according to Forbes. Forbes reported the group planed on releasing some of the year’s biggest box-office movies online, promising 40 movies in total. However, their plans stopped after uploading less than half that number, following personal details that could identify one of the group’s members were posted online.
The leaks started just before Christmas with the release of Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, which is believed to come from one of the screener copies sent out to critics and awards judges. It’s now believed that The Hateful Eight movie was downloaded a million times.
