Hayden Panettiere Director Recalls “Dark” Energy on Movie Set Before Her Death

Date:

Director Griff Furst is reflecting on working with Hayden Panettiere following the actress’s death at age 36.

Furst, who co-directed the 2025 horror-comedy A Breed Apart with his brother Nathan Furst, recalled being concerned about Panettiere while working with her on the movie. In an Instagram video shared after her death, he said something seemed wrong despite the actress remaining enthusiastic about the project.

Furst described Panettiere as incredibly talented and gracious but said the atmosphere surrounding her at the time felt “pretty dark.” His recollections come as authorities continue investigating her death in South Carolina, with the official cause and manner still undetermined pending toxicology results.

Hayden Panettiere Was “Not OK” on A Breed Apart, Director Says

Furst said he had met Panettiere years earlier and was excited when she agreed to appear in A Breed Apart.

However, he recalled receiving an early indication from members of the production team that something seemed unusual after she arrived.

When Furst went to greet the actress, she was with Brian Hickerson, her on-again, off-again partner. Although Furst described Panettiere as sweet, gracious and excited about working, he said it became clear to him that she was struggling.

Having worked on more than 100 movies, the filmmaker said the situation stood out to him. He declined to provide specific details about what he observed but characterized the energy around her as unusually dark.

What Did Griff Furst Say About Hayden Panettiere?

Hayden Panettiere Was Still a “Force” on Camera, Furst Recalls

Despite his concerns, Furst emphasized Panettiere’s talent.

He remembered the actress as a powerful performer and said that quality was still visible while they were making the movie. At the same time, he felt there was something making it more difficult to connect with her personally.

That distinction is important.

Furst’s comments describe his personal observations and impressions from the production, rather than establishing any medical conclusion about Panettiere’s condition at the time.

The director’s recollections have received additional attention following her sudden death, but authorities have not officially linked circumstances on the movie set to her death.

What Was A Breed Apart?

A Breed Apart was released in May 2025 and combined horror, thriller and comedy elements.

The story follows Violet, an influencer invited to a private island alongside other social media personalities. What initially appears to be an opportunity for viral content becomes dangerous when the group is drawn into a deadly situation involving the island’s feral dogs.

The cast included Grace Caroline Currey, Virginia Gardner, Riele Downs, Zak Steiner, Page Kennedy, Joey Bragg, Troy Gentile and Panettiere. Griff and Nathan Furst directed the film.

Panettiere played Hayden Hearst, adding another horror project to a career that already included her fan-favorite portrayal of Kirby Reed in the Scream franchise.

Brian Hickerson Was Reportedly With Panettiere During Production

Furst also recalled Hickerson being present when he went to see Panettiere during the production.

Panettiere and Hickerson had a complicated history dating back to 2018. Their relationship had previously drawn significant attention because of domestic violence cases involving Hickerson.

Reports following Panettiere’s death indicate Hickerson was also present in South Carolina when the medical emergency occurred. An incident report says he showed responding officers a bag containing medication she had been taking.

However, the official cause of death remains undetermined, and toxicology testing is still pending. Those facts are important because early reports and emergency dispatch information should not be treated as a final medical determination.

Authorities Continue Investigating Panettiere’s Death

Panettiere was found unresponsive in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 16, 2026.

Emergency personnel attempted to resuscitate her before she was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m., according to reporting citing the Greenville County Coroner’s Office.

An autopsy found no signs of trauma contributing to her death. The cause and manner remain undetermined while investigators await toxicology results, which the coroner said could take several weeks.

That means reports characterizing her death as an overdose remain preliminary rather than an officially established cause.

Panettiere’s family has requested privacy while mourning her death.

Other Colleagues Reflected on Panettiere’s Final Years

Furst isn’t the only person who worked with Panettiere to reflect on interactions with her during her final years.

Actor Justin Chatwin, who worked with Panettiere on Sleepwalker, reportedly recalled sensing loneliness and feeling that something about her seemed different during production.

Broadcaster Gayle King, who interviewed Panettiere in May 2026, also reflected after her death on the difficult impression she took away from their conversation.

At the same time, tributes from across the entertainment industry have emphasized Panettiere’s talent, warmth and impact. Fellow actors and former colleagues have remembered the performer behind characters including Claire Bennet in Heroes, Juliette Barnes in Nashville and Kirby Reed in Scream.

Hayden Panettiere’s Career Spanned More Than Three Decades

Hayden Panettiere Leaves Behind Memorable Film and TV Performances

Hayden Panettiere spent most of her life working in entertainment.

She became internationally recognizable as Claire Bennet in NBC’s Heroes before earning two Golden Globe nominations for her performance as country singer Juliette Barnes on Nashville. She also developed a dedicated horror following through her role as Kirby Reed in Scream 4 and Scream VI.

Earlier in her career, she appeared in films including Remember the Titans, Raising Helen and Ice Princess.

Her later years also included a return to filmmaking and the publication of her 2026 memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, in which she wrote candidly about difficult experiences throughout her life.

Furst’s recollections add another perspective on that period, but his comments are ultimately one colleague’s memories of working with her. Her broader legacy encompasses decades of performances across television and film.
